Job description

Job Title: Summer Student Assistant I

Job Classification: Business Operations, Student

Department: Interactive Media & Language Center, Modern Languages & Cultures

Work Schedule: Monday - Thursday, 9-noon

Desired Length of Employment: Summer I and Summer II

Pay Rate: $8.50/hr

Key Components:

The Interactive Media & Language Center (iMLC) is seeking an energetic and reliable student assistant for Summer I and Summer II sessions. IMLC assistants support students and faculty using our spaces and resources, and they help manage the materials, technology, and facilities that support Baylor's modern language programs.

The iMLC includes three specialized rooms, a service desk, and an encoding room. Our audio and video materials supplement coursework in modern languages, and student assistants play an active role in maintaining these resources. Assistants stay engaged throughout their shifts-helping visitors, completing assigned projects, and ensuring smooth daily operations.

We are looking for outgoing, helpful individuals with strong computer skills and a willingness to learn. Students with foreign language experience or an interest in language study are strongly encouraged to apply.

Preference is given to:
- Students who have qualified for Federal Work-Study and accepted their financial aid package
- Majors/minors in modern languages, international studies, area studies, or students who speak languages other than English

Job Functions & Responsibilities
- Support Modern Languages & Cultures (MLC) faculty, staff, and students and promote language learning, especially computer-assisted language study
- Demonstrate strong technology skills and a willingness to develop additional skills related to language-learning technologies
- Create and post flyers, posters, handouts, and digital content to promote MLC programs 
- Maintain printers, computers, and other technology to ensure smooth operation
- Assist with general business operations related to assigned areas
- Deliver excellent customer service to all visitors
- Prioritize tasks, take initiative, and work independently when needed
- Assist with various projects, activities, and operational tasks as assigned
- Adhere to all University policies and procedures

  • In a student employee capacity, may perform or assist with specialized business or operational functions that contribute to departmental goals and initiatives.

Job Description:

  • Provide mid to advanced level administrative and operational support for day-to-day tasks
  • May serve as initial contact for in-person guests or callers; provide excellent customer service
  • May generate, prepare and analyze reports or perform forecasting
  • May create creative content or maintain department website(s)
  • May assist with special projects and initiatives supporting departmental goals
  • May assist with planning or coordination of events
  • May assist with identifying areas of improvement and recommend solutions
  • May assist with compliance processes
  • May assist with maintaining internal databases and records
  • May assist with developing processes and procedures
  • Perform all other duties as assigned to support Baylor's mission  
  • Ability to comply with University policies  
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance
