Job description

Our client, a well-respected non-profit education center in Hartsdale, NY is seeking an entry-level Accountant or recent college graduate to join their finance team as a Payment Specialist.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone early in their accounting career—ideally with internship experience—who wants hands-on exposure to both Accounts Payable and Payroll functions while growing within a mission-driven organization. This role begins as a temporary position with a strong path to permanent hire for the right candidate.

Key Responsibilities

  • Process and review invoices for accuracy, coding, and appropriate approvals
  • Prepare and execute vendor payments (checks, ACH, wire transfers)
  • Reconcile vendor statements and resolve discrepancies in a timely manner
  • Maintain organized, audit-ready AP records and documentation
  • Assist with processing bi-weekly or semi-monthly payroll, including timesheet review and data entry
  • Support payroll reconciliation and ensure compliance with applicable wage and hour regulations
  • Respond to employee and vendor inquiries regarding payments and payroll
  • Assist with month-end close tasks related to AP and payroll
  • Support special projects and process improvement initiatives as needed
  • Collaborate closely with the Finance/Accounting team to ensure accurate financial reporting

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required
  • Internship or prior hands-on experience in accounting, AP, or payroll strongly preferred
  • Solid foundation in basic accounting principles
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel; experience with accounting/payroll software (e.g., QuickBooks, ADP, Paylocity, or similar) a plus
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Ability to handle confidential financial and employee information with discretion
  • Excellent communication skills and a collaborative, team-oriented mindset
  • Eagerness to learn, take initiative, and grow within an accounting career path
  • Ability to work on-site five days per week in Hartsdale, NY
