Special Information:

This position may be eligible for a statutory base pay increase of $1.00 an hour effective July 1, 2026.

Identity of applicants who become finalists may be released to the public if the Department deems it necessary. Employees who exceed 1,040 hours in a calendar year are also provided health, dental and life insurance. Other benefits include retirement, paid vacation, sick and holidays. This position may be covered by a VEBA (Voluntary Employee Beneficiary Association).

A seasonal Maintenance Worker 1 position offers you a great entry level introduction into the State of Montana workforce to start your career.ย  We are looking for an observant individual that can work both independently and as a positive-minded team member on collaborative projects.ย  You will be responsible for prioritizing the cleanliness and safety of Fishing Access Sites and Wildlife Management Areas along the Rocky Mountain Front. This position is dynamic, and responsibilities will change throughout the season allowing you to acquire knowledge in the safe operation of both hand and power tools, landscaping equipment, noxious weed identification, ATV operation, and basic carpentry. The incumbent will need to possess the ability to use spreadsheets and other programs necessary to complete maintenance logs and personnel reports.

This position will typically work a 40-hour week Monday - Thursday.ย  However, flexibility exists to adapt work schedules to individual needs on a case-by-case basis.ย ย

Job Duties:

The incumbent will primarily work as a member of a crew tasked with addressing specific maintenance issues. They should be able to take initiative, achieve and maintain a high level of quality work performance, behave ethically and appropriately when serving visitors, and recognize and accept authority.ย  The incumbent must have the ability to communicate effectively with the public, providing accurate information about site facilities, regulations, and recreational opportunities.

This position requires an individual capable of identifying maintenance needs and able to adapt workflows to mitigate for public impacts.ย  Specific duties associated with this position includes building maintenance, noxious weed control, fence repair, latrine maintenance and cleaning, habitat improvement, and road/trail maintenance.

Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience):

The knowledge, skills, and abilities of this position are normally attained through a combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma or equivalency and 1 year of job-related experience. Other combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

A valid driver's license is required.ย  This is an entry level position and does not require a degree or diploma.ย  Students are encouraged to apply.ย  The successful applicant will be provided with field training to gain familiarity with the sites and associated tasks.

Basic First Aid/CPR certification is required for this position. The incumbent must have the ability to acquire the proper license/certification and maintain through continuing education and re-certification testing.

Completion of an ATV/UTV safety course is required for this position. The incumbent must have the ability to pass an Online course which is offered to the incumbent.
