Job Description
As a Critical Facilities Engineer, you help keep mission‐critical data center infrastructure running safely, reliably, and efficiently. You work across electrical, mechanical/HVAC, cooling, and controls systems to support 24/7 uptime. Depending on your level, you may focus on hands‐on learning and operations (IC2–IC3) or take on more advanced troubleshooting, leadership, and technical decision‐making (IC4–IC5). In this role, you operate and maintain critical facility systems, respond to equipment issues, and perform troubleshooting and root cause analysis to restore systems quickly and safely. You support upgrades, retrofits, and commissioning activities to ensure new or modified systems meet operational standards. You follow established procedures and technical documentation and help improve drawings, one‐lines, logs, and test plans to ensure consistent execution across sites. You work closely with operations, engineering, construction partners, vendors, and utilities to ensure safe and reliable outcomes. You communicate technical risks and findings clearly and contribute to improving standards, maintenance practices, and overall system performance. Senior technicians lead complex troubleshooting events, guide system improvements, and mentor junior team members.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Experience working with mission‐critical or industrial facility systems (data centers, utilities, manufacturing, healthcare, or large commercial environments).
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documentation such as one‐lines, schematics, P&IDs, mechanical drawings, and sequences of operation.
  • Working knowledge in at least one core domain:
    • Electrical: switchgear, UPS, generators, grounding, power distribution
    • Mechanical/HVAC: chilled water, DX, CRAH/CRAC, pumps, cooling towers
    • General: integrated facility operations across electrical, mechanical, and controls
  • Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills with experience supporting incident response, maintenance, or commissioning.
  • Ability to follow procedures, work safely, and operate effectively in time‐sensitive or high‐risk environments.
  • Understanding of safe work practices, including LOTO, arc‐flash awareness, PPE, and general industrial safety.
  • Clear communication of technical issues and risks, with strong ownership, accountability, and sound operational judgment.

Critical Facilities Engineer 1 – Entry Level Technician

  • Entry-level facilities professional with critical facilities experience required, such as data centers, hospitals, manufacturing plants, utility environments, or other mission-critical infrastructure.
  • Possesses foundational knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems.
  • May come from a technical school, trade program, military background, or early-career critical facilities role.
  • Performs routine maintenance, inspections, and operational tasks under the guidance of senior technicians.
  • Developing troubleshooting skills while learning critical infrastructure systems, equipment redundancy, and data center operations.
  • Requires close supervision and structured training but demonstrates the aptitude to grow into independent operational responsibilities.

Critical Facilities Engineer 2 – Intermediate Technician

  • Able to work independently with limited oversight in day-to-day operations.
  • Typically has several years of critical facilities experience or 1–2 years supporting data center environments.
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of electrical distribution, HVAC/cooling systems, generators, UPS systems, and building controls.
  • Performs troubleshooting, maintenance, and incident response activities with confidence.
  • Understands system interdependencies and can communicate technical issues effectively.
  • Should be able to clearly explain the critical environments and infrastructure systems they have supported.

Critical Facilities Engineer 3 – Assistant Chief Engineer

  • Advanced-level technician with extensive critical facilities or data center operations experience.
  • Often serves as an Assistant Chief Engineer (ACE), Lead Technician, or similar leadership role.
  • Proven experience mentoring, training, and guiding junior technicians and engineers.
  • Leads complex troubleshooting events, root cause analysis efforts, and operational risk assessments.
  • Provides technical direction during maintenance activities, outages, commissioning efforts, and system upgrades.
  • Strong combination of hands-on technical expertise and leadership capabilities.
  • Trusted to make operational decisions, coordinate cross-functional teams, and drive best practices across the facility.
  • May oversee PM programs, vendor coordination, and shift-level operational execution while remaining technically hands-on.
