Starting salary for this position is: $4,300 (Monthly)
Employees hired at the entry step of this range receive salary step advancement after six months and every 12 months thereafter. An employee hired at anything higher than the entry step of the range will have salary step advancement after 12 months and every 12 months thereafter until they reach the top of the salary range. Each salary step advancement will be approximately a 5% increase.

Spokane Colleges is comprised of two accredited colleges, Spokane Community College (SCC) and Spokane Falls Community College (SFCC) serving Spokane, Stevens, Whitman, Ferry, and Pend Oreille Counties, as well as portions of Lincoln County.
Both colleges are accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities and governed by the Washington State Board of Community and Technical Colleges.

About the Web Content Writer (Non-permanent, Classified)

JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision of the Website Manager, the Communications Consultant 2 (Web Content Writer) plays a key role in shaping the voice and narrative of the institution. As part of the MarCom team, this position is responsible for creating compelling, strategic, and audience-focused web content as part of an ongoing website project that is migrating to a new content management system.

This role is primarily in-person, though hybrid work may be available based on business needs and at the discretion of the MarCom team.

This is a non-permanent classified position. Not to exceed 18 months. No more than 40 hours per week.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Write, edit, and produce high-quality content for digital and print platforms including websites in enterprise content management systems. *
  • Develop content that supports enrollment, retention, advancement, and community engagement goals. *
  • Collaborate with departments to translate complex academic and institutional information into accessible, engaging narratives. *
  • Ensure all content aligns with the institution's brand voice, tone, and messaging guidelines. *
  • Ensure web content meets accessibility standards and best practices by reviewing, testing, and remediating content as needed.*
  • Maintain consistency across platforms while tailoring messages for specific audiences (e.g., prospective students, faculty, alumni, influencers, and community leaders). *
  • Model professional decorum and mutual respect in all personal interactions. *
  • Comply with district policies, procedures and directives, state and federal regulations, orders and statutes and collective bargaining agreements. *
  • Support and advance Spokane Colleges' strategic plan and perform other duties as assigned. *

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associate degree in Communications, Journalism, English, or Marketing. Or an equivalent mix of education and experience that demonstrates the candidate meets all competency requirements for this position.
  • 1-2 years of professional web writing experience, preferably in higher education.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Ability to write for diverse audiences and platforms.
  • Strong understanding of SEO, digital content strategy, and analytics.
  • Experience with content management systems (CMS), particularly Modern Campus.
  • Excellent interpersonal and collaboration skills.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, English, or Marketing or in a related field.
  • 3+ years of professional writing experience, preferably for websites in higher education.
  • Experience working in a college or university communications office.
  • Familiarity with AP style and editorial best practices.
  • Knowledge of accessibility standards for digital content.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Work is performed in an office environment with frequent interruptions and background noise.
  • Work is sedentary.
  • Seldom move up to 25 lbs.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Non-permanent, classified position. Not to exceed 18 months.
  • Full-time schedule (40 hours per week).
  • Work schedule will be determined by the supervisor.
  • This position is overtime eligible.
  • Criminal background check is required.
  • This position is eligible for coverage under a collective bargaining agreement. Membership is optional.

Medical, dental, life and long term disability insurance benefits are provided as currently administered under Public Employees Benefits Board; WA State Retirement Plan; vacation and sick leave begin to accrue at the rate of 11.33 hours vacation and 8 hours sick leave per month, upon employment. (For positions that are less than full time, leave accruals will be prorated to the percentage of the position.) This position is designated a bargaining unit position and union membership is not a condition of employment. Leave accruals and usage are governed by the WFSE collective bargaining agreement.
