Job description

The role - what you'll do

Barr is seeking a mechanical CADD technician to join our design team. In this hybrid role, you will support the mechanical group on mechanical engineering projects involving data collection, planning, problem-solving, design, and construction assistance. The person in this position will work with multidisciplinary project teams to provide computer-aided drafting using AutoCAD, CADWorx, and other drafting software on a Windows platform.Assignments will include working closely with engineers to create, update, and revise drawings of mechanical and miscellaneous systems and may entail visiting project sites to gather information for drawings.

The ideal candidate for this position is intrinsically motivated and emphasizes client service. They enjoy working independently and as part of a team, using their project communication expertise and technical ability for a variety of projects. They are flexible in working with their project teams and are willing to occasionally modify schedules to meet project deadlines and/or client needs. This person is also relationship-focused, as the role involves serving both internal and external clients.

Your impact - key responsibilities

  • Technical knowledge: drafting designs for pumping and piping systems, industrial ventilation, industrial equipment, conveyor systems, building systems, and various details. Occasional assistance with structural, electrical, or civil design may also be required.

  • Interpersonal savvy: effectively collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and clients to align technical work with project objectives while fostering strong, productive working relationships.

About the opportunity

  • Hybrid: a hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position can be based out of Barr's Minneapolis, or Duluth, Minnesota, offices.

  • Travel expectation: occasional field visits to client sites; travel percentage will vary by project.

  • Work environment: ability to work in locations including industrial processing facilities, power plants, renewable facilities, and other heavy industrial facilities. Appropriate safety training will be provided for the work at industrial sites. Candidates must be able to perform job duties with or without reasonable accommodation.

About you - required core competencies

  • Education: two-year technical certificate or experience and/or coursework directly related to the job responsibilities described above.

  • Software: proficiency in current versions of AutoCAD and Microsoft Office software.

  • Driver's license: possession of a current, valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship by Barr, now or in the future.

Helpful additional experience (not required):

  • 1-3 years of experience working in a design capacity on projects directly related to the job responsibilities described above at a consulting engineering or industrial organization.

  • Strong understanding of mechanical systems and their applications in an industrial environment.

  • Proficiency in additional drafting packages, such as CADWorx, Revit Structural, Solidworks, Civil 3D, MicroStation, and Geopak, as well as in spreadsheet, GIS, or word processing software.

  • Familiarity with work in an industrial environment and basic knowledge of industrial disciplines and industrial construction.

Compensation: anticipated range of $23.00-$27.00/hour. Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance. This position is classified as non-exempt (hourly) under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
