Job description

Experienced Residential Technical Designer / Drafter

Part-Time or Contract | Minneapolis, MN

Small, collaborative residential design and interiors studio is looking for an experienced technical designer/drafter with a strong understanding of custom and luxury residential construction.

We are open to a part-time employee or independent subcontractor, depending on experience and availability. This could also be a great fit for an experienced residential designer, architectural technician, or former project architect looking for flexible project-based work.

What We Need Help With

Projects may include:

* Field measuring and creating accurate existing-condition / measured sets

* Field verification of existing conditions when another team member completes the initial measure

* Translating hand sketches and conceptual floor plans into schematic design drawings

* Developing floor plans, exterior and interior elevations, and architectural details

* Taking designer redlines and sketches into Design Development and bid/pricing sets

* Developing coordinated Construction Document sets

* Converting working CAD drawings into organized, presentation-ready plot sheets

* Updating plans throughout the design and construction process

* Assisting with drawing coordination between architectural plans, interiors, cabinetry, lighting, plumbing, structural information, and contractor input

* Understanding how proposed design decisions translate into actual construction in the field

Experience We’re Looking For

The right person will have:

* Significant experience producing residential architectural drawing sets

* Strong AutoCAD skills

* Excellent technical drafting and drawing organization skills

* A solid understanding of residential construction methods and detailing

* Experience with high-end, custom, or luxury residential remodeling and new construction

* Familiarity with South Minneapolis homes, renovations, additions, and existing construction conditions

* Ability to interpret sketches, redlines, field notes, and design intent without needing every detail spelled out

* Strong attention to detail and accuracy

* Ability to work independently while also collaborating closely with designers, contractors, engineers, and consultants

Most Important

We are looking for someone who is technically strong, patient, flexible, dependable, and comfortable jumping between different types of tasks as a project develops.

You should understand that residential remodeling—especially in older Minneapolis homes—requires judgment. Existing conditions are rarely perfect, dimensions need to be verified, and drawings need to communicate clearly enough that contractors can confidently price and build from them.

We care deeply about good design, but we equally value someone who understands how a house actually gets built.

Work Structure

We are open to discussing:

* Part-time employment

* Hourly contract work

* Project-based subcontracting

* Measured-set-only work

* Ongoing drafting and technical production support

Some field work in the Minneapolis area will be necessary, but drafting and production work can be completed flexibly depending on the individual and project needs.

If interested, please send a brief introduction, résumé or summary of relevant experience, examples of residential drawing sets if available, your typical hourly rate, and your availability.
