Job description

The Landscape & Edible Garden Maintenance Trainee is an entry-level position designed for individuals interested in building a career in fine gardening, organic edible landscaping, and sustainable landscape maintenance. This six-month training position provides hands-on experience maintaining ornamental and edible landscapes, including residential gardens, urban farms, and commercial properties. Working alongside experienced Farmscape team members, trainees develop practical skills in plant identification, organic garden care, pruning, irrigation, soil stewardship, and customer service through daily field work.

Successful trainees who demonstrate strong performance, reliability, and a commitment to learning have the opportunity to apply for a Full Time role as positions become available. 

Location: Oakland, CA
Schedule: Monday-Friday, onsite hours 7:30am-4:00pm.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Support Lead and Route Farmer in maintaining a diverse range of farms and gardens across the Bay Area
  • Perform daily tasks, including weeding, pruning, planting, watering, and harvesting crops
  • Learn and implement organic and sustainable farming techniques, including crop rotation, soil management, and pest control
  • Assist with  irrigation inspections and basic repairs
  • Learn plant identification and proper plant care techniques
  • Harvest and prepare produce for distribution to clients
  • Maintain, clean, safe and organized job sites, workspaces, inventory  and vehicles
  • Follow Farmscape safety procedures,  quality standards and best practices
  • Represent Farmscape in a friendly and professional manner
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues and clients
  • Drive between project sites  (valid driver’s license required)

By the End of the Training Position, Successful Trainees Will Be Able To:

  • Perform routine landscape and edible garden maintenance tasks safely and efficiently
  • Identify common plants, crops, weeds, pests, and plant health issues 
  • Assist with basic irrigation monitoring
  • Use tools and equipment properly and safely
  • Deliver high-quality garden care that meets Farmscape standards
  • Work independently on assigned tasks while knowing when to seek guidance
  • Communicate professionally with clients and team members in the field
  • Demonstrate reliability, attention to detail, and strong outdoor work habits

Qualifications:

  • Some experience with farming, fine gardening, landscaping
  • Valid driver’s license & proof of insurance
  • Ability to learn and adapt to Farmscape best practices
  • Friendly and clear communicator 
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail a must
  • Curiosity, resourcefulness, tenacity and strong work ethic 

Physical Demands: 

  • Ability to lift 50lbs
  • Ability to work efficiently and maintain productivity in a fast-paced outdoor environment
  • Ability to perform manual work, lift heavy objects, walk and stand for long periods of time 
  • Ability to perform physical labor outdoors in various weather conditions
