Job Description:

What's the role?

The Process Engineer - Sulphur Recovery (Contact Engineer - Upgrader SRC 1/2/3 internally) is responsible for providing daily technical process engineering support and guidance to ensure his or her process units are operated in a safe, environmentally sound, reliable and profitable manner in accordance with the license to operate and the defined safe operating envelope. The Process Engineer works closely with the Production Specialist in their assigned unit on resolving unit issues and identifying opportunities.

Time Horizon: The Process Engineer focuses primarily within a 90 day outlook supporting medium to long term unit issues and opportunities. A portion of a Process Engineer's time will be spent on supporting the 24/7 shift operation to resolve short term immediate threats to the business plan.

What you'll be doing

  • Daily activities of reviewing shift logs and shift plan in preparation for the Technical Support Huddle
  • Lead the weekly alarm meetings - supports alarm management activities
  • Owner of proactive technical monitoring for the designated process unit against the safe operating envelope and License to Operate (LTO) limits for the process unit and documents the performance through defined monthly and quarterly KPI reports.
  • Works with the designated Contact Engineers (CEs) and Technical Senior Engineer (TSE) to implement and utilize the current adopted monitoring standard for the site. This activity feeds into multiple core operations, maintenance, and assurance-based work processes and deliverables.
  • Provides monthly, quarterly and annual input for production accounting and regulatory reporting (i.e. yield reporting, flaring, chemical costs, etc)
  • Ownership of the alarm database for the units
  • Identify and communicate to the technical, production and maintenance communities any threats to process safety and license to operate limits as well as threats to meeting the current production plan, annual business plan, turnaround cycle, equipment plans or maintenance plans.
  • Utilizes fact-based root cause analysis to investigate, define and troubleshoot threats.
  • Assists as appropriate in ensuring solutions to problems are acceptable from a technical integrity point of view.
  • Identify opportunities to improve unit safety, environmental performance, reliability and profitability and develop those opportunities as resources allow or escalate awareness of the opportunity and seek additional resources as appropriate.
  • Provides process engineering support for operating problems or seek process engineering support where appropriate.
  • MOC unit expert/idea approver and a process engineer/discipline reviewer. MOC focal for short term (i.e. temporary repair or impairment) or small project changes.
  • Reviews Operations Procedure from a Professional Engineer perspective provide P.Eng stamping as required

The successful candidate reports to the Technology Supervisor for Upgrader Processing. Stakeholders and Primary Interfaces: The Process Engineer will work primarily with other Process Engineers, Production Specialists, as well as other Engineers and Technologists in the Mechanical and ICE (Instrumentation, Controls, Electrical) Teams within their Asset.

Within the Projects, Engineering & Technology organization, the Process Engineer will be supported as required by TSE's within the Process Engineering Team and will interface with the Environment Engineers in the HSSE-EA Organization.

The successful candidate will be assigned to the Sulphur Recovery Process Units and will represent the Process Engineering discipline on a multi-discipline team. The ability to deal with multiple issues and to work collaboratively with a high sense of ownership is required. A broad skillset is required for this position, flexibility and willingness to learn new skills.

Coaching and mentoring of Junior staff is an expected activity to develop the site Process Engineering skill pool. Coverage will be required for events such as unit upsets, start-ups, shutdowns, and Turnarounds - Off Hours call out support only if required.

  • The candidate must have legal authorization to work in the Canada on a full-time basis
  • Must be a registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with APEGA or eligible for registration, as this is a regulatory requirement for this position
  • Minimum 6 years of experience in in refining/upgrading/chemical plant technology, BS ChE degree (or equivalent)
  • Good knowledge in Sulphur processing, hydro processing, crude, conversion technologies
  • Working knowledge of process control systems and theory
  • Knowledge of corrosion mechanisms as they apply to the processes being supported and of the materials, process controls and methods to mitigate those mechanisms
  • Must have strong technical skills and the ability to perform in-depth problem solving
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills are essential
  • Must be proficient in use of spreadsheets, computer and simulation models
