Job description

American Battery Technology Company (ABTC) provides technical development and commercialization of domestic, sustainable sourcing of critical battery materials through lithium-ion battery recycling and battery metal extraction technologies for use in batteries that power electric cars, grid storage applications, and consumer electronics and tools. Our first of kind systems produce commercial-scale battery materials that are sold into the battery manufacturing supply chain.
As Analytical Chemist, the incumbent helps perform all facets of laboratory operations and chemical analyses to support process design & implementation of our proprietary lithium-ion battery recycling processes and primary resource extraction technologies. This candidate will work closely with our engineering organization, our plant operations team, and our R&D team to ensure the successful design, construction, and operations of our facilities.
Our pilot plant in McCarren, Nevada is the first integrated implementation of our multi-step processing train for the full mechanical processing, physical separations, chemical extractions, and production of commercial-scale battery metals that will be resold back into the battery manufacturing supply chain to enact a low-cost, low-environmental impact, and domestically sourced closed-loop circular economy. This position will report to the Director of Analytical Services.
Requirements
Perform routine operation of analytical instrumentation according to standardized operating procedures (SOP), including but not limited to
  • Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emissions Spectroscopy (ICP-OES)
  • Ion Chromatography (IC)
  • Total Organic Carbon analyzer (TOC)
  • Titrators, pH sensors, and various other benchtop analytical instrumentation
  • Gas Chromatography (GC-FID/MS)

Perform data analysis, validation, and reporting of quality control testing to support commercial-scale battery metals sold to the battery manufacturing supply chain including
  • Sample data and analytical results entry in Laboratory Information Management System
  • Generate Certification of Analyses (CoA) for final products

Help coordinate analytical chemistry lab operations, including but not limited to
  • Maintain adequate supplies of laboratory consumables
  • Receive and process incoming samples for chemical analysis
  • Perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting of analytical instrumentation
  • Train new analytical chemistry technical staff on methods and instrumentation

Ensure a safe laboratory work environment by adhering to Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) including
  • Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as appropriate
  • Uphold laboratory hygiene policies and procedures through records keeping and management of laboratory waste

Minimum Qualifications
A background in Analytical Chemistry/Chemical Engineering with 3 or more years of laboratory experience operating instrumentation and performing sample preparation
  • Organic analytical instrumentation including (GC, HPLC, TOC)
  • Liquid/Liquid Extraction, Solid Phase Extraction, Semi-Prep LC
  • Inorganic analytical instrumentation (IC, ICP)
  • Various acid-base titrations and measurements
  • Chemical processing background (Oil, Gas & Chemicals, Metals & Mining, Mineral Processing, etc.)

Physical Demands
Lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling activities required to move laboratory equipment and consumables such as instrumentation, compressed gas cylinders, and dewars.
Positional demands of the job such as standing at sample processing and analytical instrumentation on benchtops and in chemical fume hoods as well as sitting at computer workstations processing analytical data.

Expected Pay Range
$30/hr - $40/hr
Compensation for this position may vary based on a number of individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and relevant education or training. The total compensation package may also include additional components such as bonus, equity, and benefits, which will be detailed upon offer of employment.
