Common Search/ComparisonYesYes

The Entry Level Cfd Simulation Engineer primarily focuses on fluid dynamics simulations using CFD software, often in research or development settings. In contrast, Mechanical Design Engineers concentrate on creating and testing mechanical components and systems through CAD tools. While both roles require a mechanical engineering background, CFD engineers emphasize simulation skills, whereas design engineers focus on physical product development.

What does an Entry Level CFD Simulation Engineer do?

An Entry Level CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) Simulation Engineer assists in creating and running simulations to analyze how fluids (liquids and gases) behave in different environments, such as inside engines, pipes, or around vehicles. They use specialized software to model fluid flow, temperature, and related physical phenomena, helping engineers optimize designs for efficiency and safety. Their work often includes preparing geometry, setting up simulations, analyzing results, and documenting findings under the supervision of more experienced engineers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Entry Level CFD Simulation Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level CFD Simulation Engineer, you need a solid background in fluid dynamics, heat transfer, and numerical methods, usually supported by a degree in mechanical, aerospace, or related engineering fields. Familiarity with CFD software such as ANSYS Fluent, OpenFOAM, or STAR-CCM+, as well as proficiency in programming languages like Python or MATLAB, is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate technical findings clearly are standout soft skills. These competencies are essential for accurately modeling physical phenomena, interpreting simulation data, and effectively collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.

Job description

Job Description

At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences that are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. We're turning today's impossible into tomorrow's standard -from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features.

Every day, our products move millions of peopleas we aim to makedriving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale.

The Role

The Thermal Execution Virtual Design Development Validation (VDDV) team is a cutting-edge team, utilizing Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), to lead the vehicle development from integrated Front End Air Flow solutions to Thermal Management for under hood/underbody thermal protection, for Electric Vehicles and Internal Combustion Engine Vehicles. The team is currently virtually validating Front End Airflow requirements and continuing to push the envelope as it relates to transient simulation capability. It is an exciting time to join the team!

The Thermal Execution VDDV Engineer - FEAF and Calibration Support will build, run, and interpret results from various vehicle front end airflow models. The engineer will then also support the Airflow calibration team to identify processes and methods needed to support the FEAF calibration process virtually. They will also provide the needed data to establish calibrations for the vehicle.

The engineer will join a multi-disciplined team of engineers who perform thermal and fluid flow simulations of varying complexity to drive the design of vehicles and powertrains. Key elements of the job are:

What You'll Do

  • Perform vehicle level CFD simulation to determine the flow thru the front end for thermal performance

  • Perform Propulsion focused CFD simulations under various load cases to lead the design of the Propulsion system and its components.

  • Work on future vehicle and propulsion programs with a focus on process efficiency and innovation

  • Pro-actively develop CFD simulations for new programs based on propulsion and/or vehicle content and functional objectives

  • Work closely with Propulsion Program Management Teams (PMT), Thermal/HVAC Development Engineers, Aero Performance Engineers, Studio and Design Release Engineers to communicate simulation results and make design recommendations.

  • Work closely with the FEAF Calibration teams to enhance processes and procedures to enable calibrations using virtual tools.

  • Provide and support the team to provide the needed data for calibration milestones for FEAF

  • Actively participate in the Thermal Development Performance Integration Teams (PIT) meetings

  • As required, use the Compartment Integration Teams (CIT) and Product Development Teams (PDT) to drive issues to resolution

  • Validate and provide the necessary documentation to support FEAF signoff for VTC and VDC

  • Travel as required. There will be opportunities to work with test engineers at the Climatic Wind Tunnel, Aerodynamics Tunnel and at the Proving Grounds to develop an understanding of the models versus physical vehicle and powertrain performance tests. This is strategic to not only enable refinement of the analytical methods & techniques but build relationships.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • 1+ years of industry experience in Thermal and Fluid Flow Engineering & Sciences

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering with emphasis on Thermal Sciences or Aerospace Engineering or equivalent

  • Working experience with CFD & Heat transfer simulation software such as STAR-CCM+ and CAD software such as Teamcenter & UG-NX

  • Specific knowledge of engineering in heat transfer and fluid flow

  • High level of oral and written communication skills

  • Great teammate with the ability to work effectively with engineers from other functional teams

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Experience in Thermal Development or Design and Release of Automotive Systems, especially Thermal related

  • M.S. and or PHD degree in Mechanical Engineering with emphasis on Thermal Sciences or Aerospace Engineering preferred

  • Experience in calibrations and controls
