An entry level carpenter assists with basic carpentry tasks such as measuring, cutting, and assembling wood and other materials under the supervision of experienced carpenters. They help build, install, or repair frameworks, structures, and fixtures in residential, commercial, or industrial settings. Common duties include using hand and power tools, following blueprints, and ensuring work areas are clean and safe. Over time, entry level carpenters gain hands-on experience and can advance to more complex tasks as they develop their skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level carpenter?

Attention to detail, strong work ethic, and the ability to communicate and work well with a team are essential soft skills. These skills and qualities ensure safe, accurate, and efficient construction work, laying the foundation for long-term career growth.

Job description

Description:

No assembly lines. No same-thing-every-day. Everything we build is custom and one-of-a-kind.

Culton Companies designs and builds award-winning trade show exhibits, museums, and branded commercial interiors. Our carpenters and installers are the hands behind the magic — and we're currently surging with work. If you're good with your hands and want to build things that actually show up in the world, we want to talk to you.

TWO ROLES, ONE GREAT TEAM

We're hiring for both Carpenters and Installers across all experience levels — from seasoned pros to people earlier in their trade career who are eager to learn and grow. Here's what each role looks like:

Carpenter

  • Assemble CNC-cut parts into finished custom structures
  • Apply laminates and surface finishes to fabricated components
  • Stage completed elements in our setup area for final inspection
  • Work closely with the production team to hit project milestones
  • Ensure quality and craftsmanship on every build — no two alike

Installer

  • Install custom millwork and exhibit components at client facilities
  • Most projects within a day's drive of Birmingham — many are local
  • Travel is part of the role, rotated fairly so no one is always on the road
  • We do our best to get everyone home for the weekends
  • Coordinate on-site with clients and project managers for a flawless install

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

We hire for attitude as much as skill — here's what matters most:

  • Good with your hands and comfortable with tools in a production or construction environment
  • Dependable and on time — your teammates count on you showing up ready to work
  • Team player who enjoys collaborating, mentoring, and being mentored
  • Detail-oriented with a real pride in the quality of what you build
  • Positive attitude and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • For installers: valid driver's license and comfort with overnight travel on a rotation basis

Experience Levels:

  • Entry-level candidates welcome — we have a strong mentorship culture and will train the right person
  • Journeyman and experienced carpenters will step in with immediate impact and room to grow
  • Lead installer or senior fabricator experience is also highly valued

SCHEDULE & COMPENSATION

  • Full-time, hourly position — Monday through Friday, 40-hour workweeks
  • Indoor facility — no outdoor weather exposure during fabrication
  • Overtime available and encouraged when production is surging (like right now!)
  • Pay commensurate with experience level
  • Based at our Trussville, Alabama headquarters facility

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to stand, lift, and perform physical work throughout the day
  • Comfortable working with hand tools, power tools, and production equipment
  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs; team lifts available for heavier components
  • PPE required: safety glasses, hearing protection, and appropriate footwear

THE PERKS

We take care of the people who build the work:

Health, Dental & Vision

401K Retirement Plan

Paid Parental Leave

PTO + 7 Paid Holidays

? AFLAC & Liberty National

FSA Plan

Online Payroll Access

Quarterly Employee Events

Why Culton?

We're big enough to have the resources to get the work done right — and small enough that we still treat everyone like family. Our team mentors and trains each other, we work hard and have a genuinely great time doing it, and the things we build are things you'll actually be proud of. Long-tenured employees will tell you: this place feels like working with your best friends.

Good with your hands and ready to build something great? We'd love to meet you.
