Carpenter / Steel Fabricator - Sheet Metal Department
Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Carpenter / Steel Fabricator to join our Sheet Metal Department. This position is responsible for fabricating, assembling, fitting, and installing structural and light-gauge steel components used in prefabricated modular systems.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in carpentry, steel fabrication, metal framing, or structural steel, with the ability to read drawings, take accurate measurements, and produce quality work in a manufacturing environment.
This is a hands-on position requiring strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently while maintaining production schedules and quality standards.
Essential Responsibilities
  • Fabricate and assemble steel and metal components for modular mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Work with structural steel, light-gauge steel, metal studs, angle iron, channel, tubing, and other metal products.
  • Read and interpret shop drawings, fabrication drawings, blueprints, and measurements.
  • Measure, lay out, cut, drill, fit, and assemble steel and metal components accurately.
  • Construct frames, supports, platforms, racks, enclosures, and other assemblies used in modular construction.
  • Use hand tools, power tools, saws, drills, grinders, and other fabrication equipment safely and effectively.
  • Perform basic fitting and preparation of steel components prior to welding or final assembly.
  • Work closely with welders and sheet metal personnel to ensure components are properly fitted and assembled.
  • Identify dimensional or fabrication issues before components move to the next stage of production.
  • Maintain accurate measurements and ensure finished assemblies meet drawing specifications.
  • Assist with material handling and positioning of steel and fabricated components.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
  • Follow all company safety procedures, quality standards, and production requirements.
  • Communicate material, drawing, tooling, or production issues to the supervisor.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  • Previous experience in carpentry, steel fabrication, metal framing, structural steel, or a closely related trade.
  • Ability to read and understand construction drawings, shop drawings, or blueprints.
  • Strong ability to measure accurately using tape measures and other measuring tools.
  • Experience using common hand and power tools.
  • Ability to safely handle and work with steel and metal materials.
  • Strong understanding of layout, squaring, leveling, and fitting.
  • Basic understanding of fabrication processes and construction methods.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing quality work.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with structural steel or light-gauge steel framing.
  • Previous experience in a manufacturing or fabrication environment.
  • Experience working from detailed shop drawings.
  • Welding or tack-welding experience.
  • Experience with modular construction, prefabrication, or MEP assemblies.
  • Experience with metal studs, Unistrut, angle iron, channel, tubing, or similar materials.
  • Experience operating saws, drill presses, grinders, and other fabrication equipment.
  • OSHA or other construction/manufacturing safety training.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand and work for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials as required.
  • Ability to safely handle steel and other metal components.
  • Ability to work from various positions, including bending, reaching, kneeling, and climbing as required.
  • Ability to work in a manufacturing environment with exposure to noise, dust, and normal fabrication activities.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).

Preferred Experience Level
