They work under the guidance of senior designers and contribute to projects in industries such as gaming, film, architecture, and product design. Their tasks often include modeling objects, texturing, rendering, and assisting with design revisions. Strong creativity, attention to detail, and familiarity with 3D design software like Blender, Maya, or 3ds Max are important skills for this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level 3D designer?

To thrive as an Entry Level 3D Designer, you need a solid understanding of 3D modeling principles, basic design theory, and proficiency in relevant software such as Blender, Autodesk Maya, or 3ds Max, usually supported by a portfolio or relevant coursework. Familiarity with rendering engines, texture mapping, and sometimes industry certifications like Autodesk Certified User can be advantageous. Creativity, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate effectively with teams are important soft skills for this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for producing visually compelling designs and contributing productively to creative projects.

What are some common challenges faced by entry level 3D designers when working on collaborative projects?

Entry level 3D designers often find that collaborating on projects requires strong communication and adaptability, as they need to align their creative vision with the broader goals of a team that may include senior designers, engineers, and project managers. Learning to interpret feedback constructively and manage multiple revisions is a key challenge, especially when balancing deadlines and project standards. Familiarity with version control tools and asset management systems is beneficial, as these are commonly used to streamline teamwork and avoid conflicts in shared files. Embracing feedback and proactively seeking clarification can help new designers grow their skills and contribute effectively to collaborative efforts.

Job Title: Electrical Designer – TelecommunicationsJob Description

This role focuses on designing and modeling a wide range of telecommunications projects, including physical pathway infrastructure for inside and outside plant, equipment plan layouts, and structured cabling layouts. You will set up and manage 3D Revit models for telecom design, prepare engineering drawings from sketches and design input, and ensure all work adheres to established design and drafting standards. The position requires an experienced assistant designer who can work with limited engineering oversight, contribute to complex assignments, and support BIM coordination across disciplines while maintaining model health and data integrity.

Responsibilities
  • Design and model telecommunications projects, including physical pathway infrastructure for inside and outside plant, equipment plan layouts, and structured cabling layouts.
  • Follow all applicable company, client, and project design and drafting standards in every deliverable.
  • Lead the setup of telecommunications Revit models at the start of each project in alignment with project requirements for the telecom design team.
  • Prepare detailed engineering drawings from rough sketches, verbal instructions, notes, and general engineering and design information using Revit and other CAD software.
  • Use prescribed methods and standard techniques to complete a variety of assignments, including drawing sequence and presentation, refining rough sketches, sizing system components, analyzing problems, and performing calculations on non-routine assignments of substantial variety and complexity.
  • Produce initial designs or sketches and create redlines and mark-ups on drawings for ongoing projects with limited engineering oversight.
  • Apply relevant design codes and specifications to meet design requirements and ensure compliance with standards.
  • Complete and review design drawings within the defined scope, budget, and schedule, and perform project tasks within budgeted hours and established deadlines.
  • Organize, track, and maintain all revisions of project drawings and project-related information using prescribed methods and standards.
  • Coordinate telecommunications BIM models with other disciplines and collaborate with the overall project BIM coordinator to ensure alignment.
  • Maintain telecommunications model health and data integrity for assigned projects, identifying and resolving issues that affect model performance or accuracy.
  • Utilize both 2D and 3D applications to prepare accurate and constructible engineering drawings and design documentation.
Essential Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in drafting technology or a related field with a minimum of 2 years of related experience, or
  • Associate degree with a minimum of 3 years of related experience, or
  • High school diploma with a minimum of 4 years of progressive detailing and design experience.
  • Demonstrated experience as an assistant designer, not entry-level or purely detailing-focused.
  • Strong understanding and hands-on experience with design software, including Revit and AutoCAD, to develop design deliverables.
  • Experience in Autodesk Revit, with the ability to set up and manage telecommunications Revit models.
  • Ability to use both 2D and 3D applications to prepare engineering drawings.
  • Basic knowledge of telecommunications design, calculations, and systems.
  • Basic knowledge of the theory and practices of the primary engineering discipline and an understanding of fundamental concepts of related disciplines.
  • Ability to operate discipline-related design software necessary to execute production work.
  • Proficiency with Excel to support design deliverables and documentation.
  • Ability to work within defined budgets and schedules and to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience with data center design or similar complex telecommunications environments.
  • Familiarity with structured cabling layouts and physical pathway infrastructure for both inside and outside plant.
  • Experience organizing and maintaining drawing revisions and project documentation according to established standards.
  • Ability to learn and effectively utilize new design software and programs as project needs evolve.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in drawings, calculations, and model management.
  • Effective communication skills to interpret verbal instructions and collaborate with engineers, designers, and BIM coordinators.
  • Problem-solving skills to analyze design issues and contribute to non-routine assignments of substantial variety and complexity.
Work Environment

The role operates in a professional design and engineering environment that relies heavily on Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD, Excel, and other CAD and BIM tools to deliver high-quality telecommunications design solutions. Work primarily takes place in an office or hybrid setting using 2D and 3D modeling applications, with a strong emphasis on digital collaboration and coordination with other disciplines through BIM. The position involves working within defined project budgets and schedules, handling multiple assignments concurrently, and adhering to established design and drafting standards and procedures. The environment supports continuous learning, particularly in new design software and technologies, and encourages precise documentation, organized drawing management, and close coordination with project teams.
