Responsibilities

The Senior Underwriting Advisor for the Light Brokerage division plays a pivotal role in shaping the underwriting expertise across the team.ย  This position is responsible for mentoring and developing underwriters, ensuring consistency in underwriting processes, supporting strategic Light Brokerage product development, and fostering strong agency relationships.ย  The Senior Underwriting Advisor inspires and energizes others by providing leadership guidance and strong coaching feedback.ย  In addition to advisory responsibilities, this role includes underwriting a book of business and maintaining high-quality relationships with assigned agents.ย 

Risk Selection & Underwriting Execution

  • Determine risk acceptability, pricing, coverage, terms, and conditions within defined authority and underwriting guidelines.
  • Provide guidance and approval on complex or high-severity accounts, including referrals exceeding other underwriters' authority.
  • Underwrite and quote new and renewal business for assigned agents and as needed to support team service standards.
  • Maintains profitable book of business including monitoring book for trends, profitability, and growth.
  • Collaborates with Contract Bind underwriting teams to ensure proper placement of a risk and communication market/agent trends and issues between divisions.

Agency Management

  • Assess agent performance based on profitability, growth, quality of submissions, bind ratios, and other key performance indicators.
  • Markets, builds, and strengthens agency relationships with key producers within agencies that can produce a flow of preferred business to meet production targets.

Training & Development

  • Lead onboarding and training of new underwriters, ensuring a strong foundation in underwriting philosophy, systems, and processes
  • Provide regular coaching and feedback to less-experienced underwriters to support career growth and development
  • Actively engage and participate in underwriting huddles, team meetings and claims round tables.

Communication

  • Maintain strong relationships with internal stakeholders, including Line of Business Product Leaders and Contract Bind Underwriters, along with external agency partners
  • Represent the Light Brokerage Underwriting team in cross-functional initiatives demonstrating diplomacy and flexibility
  • Communicate clearly and professionally in both written and verbal formats

Process & Operational Consistency

  • Ensuring underwriting processes, documentation standards, and workflows are consistently applied across the team.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement and collaborate with leadership and Strategic Initiatives Group to implement best practices

Product Development Collaboration

  • Collaborate with Line of Business product leaders to enhance and expand the Light Brokerage product suite
  • Provide insights and agent feedback to inform product development team of market relevance and ensuring our product remains competitive
  • Participate in product rollouts, particularly regarding training and communication of changes to the Light Brokerage team
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • AIS, ASLI and AU designations or completion of other insurance related classes is a plus.
  • A minimum of three years' of experience as a Senior Underwriter in the Excess and Surplus lines.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, presentation, interpersonal and leadership skills.
  • Strong understanding of the E&S Light Brokerage business environment.
  • Intermediate to Advanced experience in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams) and aptitude to learn new applications, as needed.
  • Must be able to travel, including overnight stays, to visit agents and attend conventions as necessary
