Position Description:

This position reports directly to the President of RLE in North America and will work closely with your peers in Program Management, HR, Finance and Shop Services.

The Core Engineering Manager will take responsibility for their own and their team’s work output, ensuring accuracy and best judgement. They will lead and grow our core engineering team and will work on an array of interesting and diverse projects. We require a proven engineering leader with a blend of theoretical and hands-on skills together with adaptability as we often engineer a solution and then build a concept demonstrator of what we have engineered. Responsibilities will include daily leadership and mentorship of a team of engineers and designers, workload and conflict management, participating in new project discovery with input to resource and cost estimating, working closely with other department peers and reporting to the President as required.

Projects can range in scope and diversity from a single-person, single-week project to large teams in multi-year projects. Historical projects include elements of Product Development, Technical Demonstration builds, testing planning, low-volume manufacturing and quality assurance activities all to support an overall successful program.

The position will require you to be present at our Product Development Center in Romulus, MI. 1 day/week hybrid may be possible once established and projects allow. We are looking for candidates with a “can do” attitude who are interested to be part of our expanding positive work environment.

Job Overview:

The engineering manager will manage and lead the engineers and designers to complete complex design and development activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Organizing, Planning, and Prioritizing Work — Developing specific goals and plans to prioritize, organize, and accomplish work assignments. Prepare staff schedules or work assignments to meet the project objectives, budget, schedules, and deadlines.
  • Guiding, Directing, and Motivating Subordinates — Providing guidance and direction to subordinates, including setting performance standards and monitoring performance.
  • Coordinating the Work and Activities of Others — Getting members of a group to work together to accomplish tasks.
  • Direct design or development activities and provide technical guidance to staff and other functional groups.
  • Identifying potential engineering/design flaws and providing solutions to improve the engineering/design.
  • Coaching and Developing Others — Identifying the developmental needs of others and coaching, mentoring, or otherwise helping others to improve their knowledge or skills. Monitor performance of organizational members.
  • Providing Consultation and Advice to Others — Providing guidance and expert advice to management or other groups on technical, systems or process.
  • Represent RLE and your team in client meetings, identifying engineering design requirements and feedback to meet the client’s needs. Prepare or present technical or project status reports.
  • Ensure that all safety standards are met during the process.
  • Working with suppliers to ensure that all materials specified are used meet industry standards.
  • Conducting research on new technologies that may impact the product.
  • Maintaining records of all engineering and design decisions made during the process.
  • Implement process improvements.
  • Support in business development and overall company growth.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in engineering.
  • 10+ years of hands-on engineering management experience.
  • Strong proficiency in project management, conflict resolution, performance evaluation, and technical system design.
  • Must be able to clearly communicate assignments and coach subordinates.
  • Communication and presentation skills - effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers and customers. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Analytical - Demonstrate attention to detail and diligently work to understand and anticipate engineering requirements before problems arise.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Data analytics skills and experience.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Flexible thinking, including the ability to pivot and try new approaches when faced with challenges.
  • Organizational, planning, and documentation skills.
