How much do engineering technologist jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 7, 2026, the average hourly pay for engineering technologist in the United States is $32.88, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $25.24 and $38.46 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some typical challenges Engineering Technologists face when working on multidisciplinary teams?

Engineering Technologists often collaborate with engineers, designers, and technicians from various disciplines, which can present challenges such as differing communication styles, technical jargon, and varying project priorities. Successfully navigating these challenges requires strong interpersonal skills, adaptability, and a willingness to bridge knowledge gaps. Building rapport and understanding each team member's expertise helps ensure project goals are met efficiently and that all technical requirements are addressed.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Engineering Technologist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Engineering Technologist, you need a solid background in applied engineering principles, mathematics, and problem-solving, usually supported by a relevant degree or diploma. Familiarity with CAD software, laboratory instrumentation, and industry-specific standards or certifications such as CET (Certified Engineering Technologist) is typically required. Strong communication, teamwork, and analytical thinking are key soft skills that help bridge the gap between engineers and technicians. These abilities are crucial for ensuring efficient project execution, accurate technical support, and effective collaboration in engineering environments.

What are Engineering Technologists?

Engineering Technologists are professionals who apply engineering and technical principles to solve practical problems in a variety of industries. They often work alongside engineers to implement, operate, and improve systems, equipment, or processes. Unlike engineers, who may focus more on theory and design, technologists emphasize the application and implementation of technology. Their roles can include testing, quality control, production support, and project management. Engineering Technologists play a crucial role in bridging the gap between engineering theory and real-world application.

What is the difference between Engineering Technologist vs Engineering Technician?

AspectEngineering TechnologistEngineering Technician
CredentialsDiploma or degree in engineering technologyDiploma or certificate in engineering technology
Work EnvironmentDesign, development, and project managementImplementation, testing, and maintenance
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in engineering firms, manufacturing, constructionUsed in similar industries, often under supervision

Engineering Technologists typically hold a diploma or degree and are involved in designing and managing engineering projects, while Engineering Technicians focus on implementing and testing designs. Both roles are essential in engineering fields, but Technologists often have broader responsibilities and higher qualifications.

  • power, RF amplifiers, or RF components.
  • Hands-on electrical, electronics, and basic mechanical skills (lab or industrial setting).
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics, diagrams, and technical documentation.
  • Experience creating electrical/electronic schematics using CAD tools.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience working with teams to design, test, or install high-power RF or high-voltage systems.
  • Familiarity with vacuum tube-based RF amplifiers and high-voltage systems.
  • Ability to apply engineering principles and best practices in design and implementation.
  • Experience translating system requirements into practical designs.

Additional Job Requirements for Engineering Technologist 2:
  • Experience leading the design, development, testing, and installation of high-power RF and high-voltage systems.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership in advancing RF amplifiers and high-voltage system designs.
  • Proven ability to lead engineering design using best practices and sound engineering principles.
  • Ability to lead installation and commissioning of a new RF test station.
  • Ability to design and implement a system to acquire, organize and analyze RF system performance data that will lead to the prediction of failures before they occur.

Education/Experience at Level 1: Position requires a bachelor's degree in engineering technology, science, math or related degree and two (2) years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Education/Experience at Level 2: Position requires a bachelor's degree in engineering technology, science, math or related degree from an accredited institution and five (5) years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience contributing to the design, testing, and installation of high-power RF, high-voltage, or pulsed-power systems.

Where You Will Work
The Accelerator Operations and Technology (AOT) division's Radio Frequency Engineering (RFE) Group is seeking an Engineering Technologist to join its High Power RF (HPRF) Team.
The AOT Division is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and modernization of all accelerator systems at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE). These systems include a 201.25 MHz drift-tube linear accelerator (LINAC) powered by high-power diacrode tubes, as well as an 805 MHz coupled-cavity LINAC powered by high-power klystrons. The facility also features a proton storage ring and approximately one kilometer of beam transport lines that deliver particle beams to five distinct research programs.
