Engineering Project Manager Remote information

What does an engineering project manager do in a remote role?

An Engineering Project Manager working remotely oversees engineering projects from concept to completion, coordinating teams, resources, timelines, and budgets, all while working outside of a traditional office setting. They use digital tools to manage project schedules, communicate with stakeholders, and ensure that deliverables meet technical and quality standards. Remote Engineering Project Managers must be skilled at virtual collaboration, problem-solving, and adapting to different time zones and work cultures. Their responsibilities may also include risk assessment, reporting progress, and ensuring compliance with industry standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an engineering project manager remote?

To thrive as an Engineering Project Manager (Remote), you need a strong background in engineering principles, project management methodologies, and typically a relevant degree or PMP certification. Familiarity with project management software like Jira, Asana, or Microsoft Project, and remote collaboration tools such as Slack or Zoom, is essential. Exceptional communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help you coordinate dispersed teams and manage project challenges effectively. These skills ensure successful project delivery, team cohesion, and the ability to navigate the complexities of remote engineering environments.

How does an engineering project manager effectively coordinate with remote teams across different time zones?

As a remote Engineering Project Manager, effective coordination often involves leveraging communication tools like Slack, Zoom, and project management platforms to keep teams aligned. You'll need to set clear expectations, establish overlapping working hours for key meetings, and document project decisions to ensure everyone stays informed. Regular check-ins, transparent progress tracking, and fostering a culture of open communication help address challenges related to time zone differences and remote collaboration. Building strong relationships and trust with team members is essential for keeping projects on track and ensuring successful delivery.

Position Overview

As a result of our continued strategic growth, we are seeking a Project Manager to join our highly respected Commercial & Industrial Services team. This role is responsible for leading and managing MEP engineering projects for industrial and manufacturing clients from concept through construction while serving as a trusted advisor to clients and project stakeholders.Β

The ideal candidate will combine strong project management experience with technical knowledge of building systems, proven leadership abilities, and client relationship management skills. This individual will oversee multidisciplinary teams, manage project budgets and schedules, ensure quality and compliance, and support business development efforts that contribute to the continued growth of our CIS practice.

Compensation Range: $120,000-$140,000

Key Responsibilities

  • Project Management: Lead and manage MEP engineering projects for industrial and manufacturing clients from concept through construction. Develop and maintain project plans, budgets, and schedules aligned with client expectations. Oversee project staffing, scope changes, contract compliance, profitability, invoicing, and receivables.
  • Client Coordination: Serve as the primary point of contact for clients, contractors, and internal teams, ensuring effective communication and collaboration throughout project execution. Conduct regular project status meetings and foster strong client relationships to identify opportunities for additional work and services.
  • Team Leadership: Coordinate multidisciplinary engineering teams, including mechanical, electrical, plumbing, structural, and fire protection disciplines. Promote collaboration and accountability to achieve successful project outcomes.
  • Design & Documentation: Oversee and contribute to the preparation of engineering reports, design drawings, technical specifications, permit applications, and bid documents. Review deliverables to ensure project requirements and contractual obligations are satisfied.
  • Quality Control & Compliance: Provide quality control of engineering documents and ensure all work complies with applicable codes, standards, and client requirements.
  • Risk & Financial Management: Proactively identify and manage project risks, delays, and design conflicts. Monitor project profitability and implement corrective actions when necessary to maintain project performance.
  • Business Development: Participate in proposal development, presentations, and relationship-building efforts with existing and prospective clients. Support the identification of new market opportunities and help align technical solutions with client business objectives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Management, Project/Operations Management, or related field preferred; significant experience in the MEP industry, particularly managing complex clients in the commercial and industrial sectors, will be considered in lieu of a preferred degree.
  • Minimum 5-8 years of relevant experience in engineering project management and/or owner's representative experience overseeing MEP engineering projects. A background in project management methodologies and team leadership is essential for success in this role.
  • Proven experience managing MEP projects in manufacturing and/or industrial facilities, including large-scale mechanical/electrical systems and process utilities, is strongly preferred.
  • Experience within industrial sectors such as pharmaceutical, food processing, automotive, warehousing/logistics, or advanced manufacturing is preferred.
  • Strong ability to engage with clients, understand business needs, and build trusted relationships.
  • Strong understanding of building systems design, construction processes, and industrial facility requirements.
  • Proficient in project management software, including project planning, task management, reporting, and analytics used to track progress and performance metrics.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
  • PMP Certification, LEED accreditation, and/or Six Sigma certification are considered a plus.
  • Knowledge of GMP, OSHA, and NFPA.
  • Process design experience a plus.

Benefits

  • Competitive 401(k) match.
  • Paid time off.
  • Tuition, professional license, and association fee reimbursement.
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage.
