To thrive as an Engineering Manager, you need a strong background in engineering principles, project management, and leadership, typically with a degree in engineering and prior technical experience. Familiarity with project management tools (such as Jira or Asana), version control systems (like Git), and potentially certifications such as PMP or Scrum Master are highly beneficial. Exceptional communication, conflict resolution, and team-building skills distinguish top performers in this role. These abilities are crucial for successfully leading technical teams, delivering projects on time, and aligning engineering output with organizational goals.

What are Engineering Managers?

Engineering Managers are professionals responsible for leading and overseeing engineering teams within an organization. They coordinate projects, manage team members, allocate resources, and ensure that engineering goals align with company objectives. What Is an Engineering Manager?

Engineering managers supervise teams of engineers and other professionals whose jobs are to collaborate on designing and developing products ranging from medical equipment to computer hardware to electrical components. Your job duties are to coordinate with teams and departments, help engineers troubleshoot and problem-solve, and make sure everyone stays on schedule to meet design and production deadlines. You need strong project management skills, extensive engineering knowledge, and excellent communication and leadership skills to succeed as an engineering manager.

How does an Engineering Manager typically balance technical leadership with people management responsibilities?

Engineering Managers are often required to split their time between technical oversight—such as code reviews, architecture decisions, and project planning—and people management tasks like mentoring, performance reviews, and team development. Striking this balance can be challenging, especially in fast-paced environments. Successful Engineering Managers usually prioritize regular one-on-ones, foster open communication, and delegate technical tasks wisely to ensure both project goals and team morale are maintained. This dual focus helps nurture a high-performing, collaborative team while ensuring technical excellence.

Job description

Position Summary...What you'll do...Join a high-impact engineering team focused on driving operational excellence and continuous improvement within our Distribution Center. In this role, you’ll own critical process improvement initiatives, reduce losses, and help standardize best-in-class ways of working using the Walmart Performance System (WPS). You’ll partner closely with area and department leaders to turn data into action and build long-term capability across the operation.
What You’ll Do

  • Deliver expected functional results by analyzing Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), driving loss elimination activities, and creating standard work to reduce process variation.
  • Manage the execution of top-loss projects in your area, including identifying savings opportunities, leading projects to remove waste from the process, and supporting WPS integration through gap analysis and performance metric reviews.
  • Apply new network “One Best Way” playbooks, provide feedback to Divisional Focused Improvement Teams on project ideas and replication opportunities, and assist area managers with process improvement projects.
  • Support department and area managers with WPS programs, associate engagement, KPI improvement efforts, and the tactical deployment of WPS methodologies within the process area.
  • Coordinate, complete, and oversee job-related activities by building strong relationships with key stakeholders, supporting plans and initiatives, monitoring progress toward goals, identifying improvement opportunities, and promoting continuous learning across the team.
  • Provide supervision and development opportunities for associates by hiring, training, mentoring, assigning duties, and offering recognition that supports a strong, inclusive team culture.
You’ll Sweep Us Off Our Feet If You…
  • Have strong experience in operations, industrial engineering, or distribution environments, with hands-on use of process improvement tools (such as 5S, root cause analysis, Six Sigma, and time and motion studies).
  • Are highly analytical, comfortable working with KPIs and performance metrics, and able to translate data into clear action plans that deliver measurable savings and loss reduction.
  • Excel at leading projects end-to-end—identifying opportunities, building business cases, driving execution, and sustaining results through standard work and WPS practices.
  • Are a natural coach and influencer, skilled at building capability in others, engaging associates at all levels, and partnering effectively with area and department managers.
  • Thrive in a fast-paced environment, adapt quickly to changing priorities, and are passionate about continuous improvement and operational excellence.
