What is an engineering manager?

Engineering Managers are professionals responsible for leading and overseeing engineering teams within an organization. They coordinate projects, manage team members, allocate resources, and ensure that engineering goals align with company objectives. Their role often involves a combination of technical expertise, leadership, and administrative skills to deliver successful engineering solutions on time and within budget.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an engineering manager?

To thrive as an Engineering Manager, you need a strong background in engineering principles, project management, and leadership, typically with a degree in engineering and prior technical experience. Familiarity with project management tools (such as Jira or Asana), version control systems (like Git), and potentially certifications such as PMP or Scrum Master are highly beneficial. Exceptional communication, conflict resolution, and team-building skills distinguish top performers in this role. These abilities are crucial for successfully leading technical teams, delivering projects on time, and aligning engineering output with organizational goals.

How does an engineering manager typically balance technical leadership with people management responsibilities?

Engineering Managers are often required to split their time between technical oversight—such as code reviews, architecture decisions, and project planning—and people management tasks like mentoring, performance reviews, and team development. Striking this balance can be challenging, especially in fast-paced environments. Successful Engineering Managers usually prioritize regular one-on-ones, foster open communication, and delegate technical tasks wisely to ensure both project goals and team morale are maintained. This dual focus helps nurture a high-performing, collaborative team while ensuring technical excellence.

What is the difference between Engineering Manager vs Software Development Manager?

Understanding these distinctions helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

Are engineering managers paid well?

Engineering managers typically earn high salaries due to their leadership responsibilities, technical expertise, and experience level. Compensation varies by industry, location, and company size but generally includes base pay, bonuses, and stock options, reflecting the seniority of the role.

Job description

Company Overview

Stord is The Consumer Experience Company, powering seamless checkout through delivery for today's leading brands. Stord is rapidly growing and is on track to double our revenue in the next 18 months. To meet and exceed this target, Stord is strategically scaling teams across the entire company, and seeking energetic experts to help us achieve our mission. By combining comprehensive commerce‑enablement technology with high‑volume fulfillment services, Stord provides brands a platform to compete with retail giants. Stord manages over $10 billion of commerce annually through its fulfillment, warehousing, transportation, and operator‑built software suite including OMS, Pre‑ and Post‑Purchase, and WMS platforms. Stord is leveling the playing field for all brands to deliver the best consumer experience at scale. With Stord, brands can increase cart conversion, improve unit economics, and drive sustained customer loyalty. Stord’s end‑to‑end commerce solutions combine best‑in‑class omnichannel fulfillment and shipping with leading technology to ensure fast shipping, reliable delivery promises, easy access to more channels, and improved margins on every order. Hundreds of leading DTC and B2B companies like AG1, True Classic, Native, Seed Health, quip, goodr, Sundays for Dogs, and more trust Stord to deliver industry‑leading consumer experiences on every order.

Role Overview

WMS is the core engine running Stord’s fulfillment operation today, in real time, for real customers. The team is also investing heavily in platform enhancements that matter to Stord’s continued growth. This role owns two engineering teams dedicated to maintaining and enhancing the platform. It is for a hands‑on manager who can lead two teams end‑to‑end, keep delivery predictable, and stay close enough to the systems to make good calls under pressure. You should have strong engineering fundamentals yourself: this isn’t a role for someone who has drifted away from the technical side of the job. If you can build strong teams, keep them delivering, and stay decisive when it counts, this role was built for you.

What You’ll DoTeam Delivery & People Leadership

Own the complete people management lifecycle for two engineering teams: hiring, 1:1s, performance management, and career development. Set sprint goals and delivery commitments for both teams, and hold them to a consistent, predictable cadence. Run team ceremonies (planning, retros, standups) in a way that builds trust and team health, not just tracks tickets.

Platform Enhancement

Drive your teams’ contribution to ongoing platform enhancement initiatives within WMS. Translate business priorities into concrete team goals and technical work breakdown. Partner with product and other WMS engineering managers to sequence enhancement work against ongoing platform needs.

Operational Excellence & Reliability

Own the reliability of the systems your teams maintain, since WMS runs live fulfillment operations with no room for silent failure. Build a production mindset on your teams: monitoring, failure modes, and operational readiness as part of the design process, not an afterthought. Lead your teams through incidents in your area of ownership, from response through root cause resolution.

Cross‑Team Alignment

Partner with peer WMS engineering managers to align priorities, standards, and technical approach across teams. Represent your teams in WMS‑wide planning and roadmap discussions. Keep your teams’ work coordinated with the rest of the WMS platform so priorities don’t drift out of sync.

What We’re Looking ForRequired
  • Strong engineering fundamentals; able to engage credibly in design discussions, code review, and architecture decisions with your teams, not just process and delivery.
  • People‑management fundamentals; managed engineers directly: hiring, performance reviews, feedback, and career development, not just project coordination.
  • Delivery ownership; can run a scrum team (or two) through predictable, consistent delivery cycles and communicate progress, risk, and blockers clearly to leadership.
  • Comfort with ambiguity; can set clear direction for your teams even when priorities or requirements shift, without needing everything spelled out beforehand.
  • Production mindset; think about reliability, monitoring, and failures as core parts of how your teams build, especially for systems running live operations.
Soft Skills
  • Ownership & Accountability: you own outcomes, not just activities.
  • Strong Communication: translate technical complexity into business language and vice versa.
  • Delegation & Multiplication: scale through people, not heroics.
  • Navigating Ambiguity: set direction when requirements evolve; build alignment across teams and functions without formal authority.
  • Balanced Judgment: balance innovation with pragmatic delivery constraints.
  • Directed AI‑Assisted Development: understand how AI coding tools work as a productivity multiplier and can guide your team's adoption while maintaining quality and independent technical judgment.
Preferred (Nice to Have)
  • Experience with Elixir or another functional, concurrency‑oriented language (Erlang, Scala, Clojure).
  • Experience managing multiple engineering teams within a larger platform organization.
  • Background in warehouse management, logistics, or another real‑time operational system.
  • Direct production experience with Elixir/OTP at scale.
  • Experience managing teams building meaningful enhancements into an existing, live system rather than greenfield work.
  • Familiarity with warehouse operations concepts (picking, packing, inventory, labor allocation).
Success Looks Like
  • 30 days: Built working relationships with both of your teams, understand the current state of ongoing platform work, and have a clear read on near‑term delivery risk.
  • 90 days: Both teams are delivering on a predictable cadence, and you’ve established clear priorities and ownership within your scope.
  • 6 months: Your teams have shipped measurable progress on their platform roadmap, and you’re recognized as a reliable, steady hand within WMS engineering leadership.
