What is an engineering manager part time?

An Engineering Manager Part Time job involves overseeing engineering teams and projects while working fewer hours than a full-time role. Responsibilities typically include project planning, team leadership, technical guidance, and ensuring deadlines are met. This role is ideal for experienced engineers seeking flexibility while still contributing to strategic decision-making and team development. Part-time engineering managers often work in startups, consulting roles, or companies that support flexible work arrangements. The exact hours and expectations vary by company and industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the engineering manager part time position?

To thrive as an Engineering Manager Part Time, you need a strong background in engineering principles, team leadership, and project management, typically supported by a relevant degree and several years of technical experience. Familiarity with project management tools (such as Jira or Asana), version control systems (like Git), and possibly certifications in Agile or Scrum methodologies are often important. Effective communication, time management, and the ability to motivate teams in a limited timeframe are vital soft skills for this role. These skills ensure projects stay on track, teams are productive, and organizational goals are met despite the part-time structure.

What are the main challenges faced by part-time engineering managers compared to full-time managers?

Part-time engineering managers often face the challenge of maintaining effective oversight and communication with their teams despite limited working hours. They need to prioritize key tasks, delegate effectively, and ensure that critical decisions are made promptly while balancing their availability. Success in this role relies on strong organization skills and the ability to stay connected with cross-functional teams, even when not physically present. Many employers address these challenges through clear scheduling, regular check-ins, and collaboration tools that bridge time gaps. Understanding these dynamics can help candidates prepare for a part-time management position and set themselves up for success.

This role sits at the intersection of application development, streaming behavior, and operational reliability. You will partner closely with platform team leads, backend services, and streaming infrastructure partners to ensure our CTV applications deliver high quality live and VOD experiences at scale.
This is a hybrid position based in either Knoxville, TN or New York, NY, with regular collaboration across engineering, product, and streaming teams.
Responsibilities:
Domain Ownership and Execution
  • Own delivery outcomes and operational health for streaming applications across CTV platforms
  • Lead execution across Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Samsung, and related platforms
  • Ensure consistent playback behavior, reliability, and performance across devices
  • Translate product priorities into executable plans across streaming app teams
  • Balance feature delivery with platform stability and technical debt reduction

People Leadership
  • Directly manage CTV and streaming focused Team Leads
  • Coach Team Leads on execution, release ownership, and people leadership
  • Ensure teams have clear ownership, priorities, and accountability
  • Support career development and performance management for Team Leads

Delivery and Release Oversight
  • Accountable for release outcomes for streaming applications
  • Ensure teams follow shared release standards and rollout strategies
  • Partner with Team Leads during release windows and post release validation
  • Review post release analytics, crash reporting, and playback metrics
  • Ensure issues discovered after release are triaged and addressed quickly

Operational Excellence
  • Act as an escalation point for streaming application incidents
  • Partner with infrastructure and backend teams during playback or delivery issues
  • Support incident response and post incident reviews for streaming related problems
  • Drive improvements in observability, logging, and monitoring within CTV apps
  • Identify systemic playback or reliability risks and prioritize remediation

Cross Team Collaboration
  • Partner with native app, backend, streaming infrastructure, and QA teams
  • Coordinate dependencies between app teams and streaming services
  • Communicate risks, tradeoffs, and timelines clearly to stakeholders
  • Ensure alignment between app level behavior and backend streaming capabilities

Strategy and Planning
  • Partner with Product and leadership on the streaming applications roadmap
  • Own capacity planning and hiring needs for streaming app teams
  • Balance short term delivery needs with long term platform health
  • Contribute to technical direction for playback frameworks and shared CTV components

What We're Looking For
  • 7 plus years of experience in software engineering with a focus on client applications
  • 3 plus years of experience in an engineering management or senior technical leadership role
  • Strong experience with CTV platforms such as Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Samsung, or similar
  • Deep understanding of video playback, streaming behavior, and app level failure modes
  • Experience managing delivery across multiple teams or pods
  • Proven ability to lead teams through releases and production issues
  • Strong communication skills and ability to partner across disciplines

Bonus Points
  • Experience with live streaming, VOD, and ad supported playback models
  • Familiarity with streaming metrics such as startup time, rebuffering, and error rates
  • Experience working in media, OTT, or broadcast environments
  • Background partnering closely with backend or streaming infrastructure teams

Why Join Us
You will join an engineering organization where streaming applications are a core product surface used by millions of viewers. At TEGNA, you will play a key role in shaping the reliability, quality, and evolution of our CTV experiences across platforms.
You'll have the opportunity to lead teams, improve how we ship and operate streaming apps, and directly influence the viewer experience at scale.
