Position: Warranty Commissioning Engineer/Manager

POSITION SUMMARY

Barton Malow is seeking an experienced Warranty & Commissioning Engineer or Manager to lead warranty management and system commissioning on solar construction projects. This role bridges operations and quality, ensuring all installed systems perform to specification and client expectations while protecting Barton Malow's long-term reputation and financial position. This role will be overseeing of all Barton Malow solar project warranty work throughout Michigan and surrounding states.  As part of solar commissioning team, this role will also support project testing, commissioning, and closeout.  This position requires a combination of office-based and on-site project support, ideal for someone who combines technical solar knowledge with strong communication and problem-solving skills.


KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Warranty Management

    • Manage equipment warranties for inverters, [AR1.1] tracking, BOS components, and balance-of-plant infrastructure.
    • Maintain detailed warranty documentation and coordinate with manufacturers on coverage terms.
    • Investigate and process warranty claims for equipment failures, installation workmanship, or performance deficiencies.
    • Interface with clients, manufacturers, and trade partners on warranty-related issues.

Commissioning & Testing

    • Develop and execute comprehensive commissioning plans for PV arrays, electrical systems, balance of system (BOS), and related infrastructure.
    • Coordinate system testing including inverter performance verification, string testing, grounding continuity, and safety equipment functionality.
    • Oversee thermal imaging, I-V curve testing, and other diagnostic procedures to validate system performance.
    • Document all test results, create punch list items, and drive closure with manufacturers and trade contractors.
    • Ensure compliance with National Electrical Code (NEC), local utility interconnection standards, and equipment manufacturer specifications.

Project Documentation & Closeout

    • Compile equipment installation QA/QC documentation, performance reports, and O&M manuals into final project deliverables.
    • Coordinate with Engineer of Record to develop as-built documentation and system drawings reflecting actual installation conditions.
    • Coordinate client training and system familiarization sessions with subcontractors and vendors.
    • Lead final walk-throughs with owners and ensure punch list completion.

Coordination & Reporting

    • Communicate project status and issues to project management, clients, and executive stakeholders.
    • Identify and escalate scope, schedule, and cost impacts related to warranty or commissioning activities.
    • Support proposal development by providing realistic commissioning timelines and resource requirements.
    • Mentor project teams on commissioning best practices and system performance expectations.

 


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • 5+ years of experience in solar construction, O&M, commissioning, or related field-or equivalent combination of solar industry experience and project engineering background.
  • Working knowledge of utility-scale or C&I solar systems, including PV modules, inverters, electrical balance of system, and mounting equipment.
  • Hands-on experience with commissioning workflows, system testing procedures, and troubleshooting methodologies.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, one-line diagrams, and equipment specifications.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple documentation streams and timelines simultaneously.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Physical capability to work in outdoor construction environments.
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel to active construction sites as needed.
  • Knowledge of energy storage systems or hybrid solar-plus-storage projects
  • Track record managing warranty claims or working directly with equipment manufacturers
  • Project management certification (PMP, CAPM) or equivalent professional credential
  • Experience with project controls systems or construction management software (e.g., Autodesk Construction Cloud, Primavera P6, or Barton Malow's internal platforms)
