Engineer Internships are designed for students or recent graduates gaining practical experience, while Mechanical Engineers are full-time professionals responsible for designing, analyzing, and maintaining mechanical systems. Internships serve as a stepping stone into the industry, whereas Mechanical Engineers hold permanent roles with greater responsibilities.

What are some common challenges engineering interns face during their internship, and how can they overcome them?

Engineering interns often encounter challenges such as adjusting to real-world workflows, learning new software or technical tools quickly, and effectively communicating within multidisciplinary teams. To overcome these, it's helpful to proactively ask questions, seek feedback from mentors, and take initiative in learning about company processes. Building relationships with fellow interns and team members can also provide valuable support and insights, making the transition smoother and more rewarding.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Engineer Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Engineer Intern, you need a solid understanding of engineering fundamentals, problem-solving skills, and relevant coursework in your field of study, often supported by enrollment in an accredited engineering program. Familiarity with technical tools such as CAD software, MATLAB, or project management platforms is typically expected. Strong communication, teamwork, and eagerness to learn help interns stand out and integrate effectively with professional teams. These skills and qualities are important for contributing meaningfully to projects, adapting quickly, and maximizing the learning experience during the internship.

Job description

Neon is seeking an Associate Engineer - Propellers to support the design, analysis, and documentation of aerospace and mechanical systems. In this early-career role, you will contribute to CAD modeling, engineering drawings, structural analysis, analytical modeling, and manufacturing-support activities while working alongside experienced engineers and cross-functional teams. This is a strong opportunity for someone with an aerospace or mechanical engineering foundation and a genuine interest in aircraft, mechanical systems, manufacturing, and hands-on technical problem solving.

Why This Role Matters

  • You will help turn engineering concepts into accurate models, drawings, and product-definition data used to support real aerospace hardware.
  • You will support product design and analysis work that contributes to aircraft-related systems, components, and assemblies.
  • You will work closely with engineering and manufacturing teams to improve manufacturability, technical quality, and design readiness.
  • You will gain exposure to CAD design, structural modeling, FEA, GD&T, model-based definition, and engineering documentation in a fast-paced aerospace environment.
  • You will contribute in a collaborative work environment that may include office-based engineering, lab interaction, manufacturing coordination, and hands-on technical support.
  • You will work in a project-driven setting where priorities may shift based on program milestones, design reviews, manufacturing needs, or test activity.

What You'll Bring

  • Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering field; equivalent professional experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Entry-level engineering experience appropriate for an Associate Engineer 1 role, including academic projects, internships, co-ops, research, manufacturing exposure, or hands-on technical experience.
  • Interest in mechanical systems, aircraft, manufacturing, and hands-on engineering.
  • Familiarity with CAD design and dimensioned engineering drawings.
  • Familiarity with analytical modeling, structural modeling, FEA, or engineering analysis.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings, engineering requirements, and design inputs.
  • Attention to detail and ability to produce accurate technical work.
  • Strong collaboration skills and willingness to learn from senior engineers and cross-functional partners.
  • Ability to communicate technical information clearly in writing and discussion.
  • Ability to work in an office-based engineering environment with periodic interaction in labs, manufacturing spaces, prototype areas, or secure work areas.
  • Ability to sit for prolonged periods while working on a computer and move between office, lab, manufacturing, and secure areas as needed.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Ability to comply with applicable ITAR, export control, program, and company security requirements.

Preferred

  • Internship, co-op, or hands-on experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with ANSYS or similar engineering analysis software.
  • Experience with FEA, structural modeling, or analytical modeling.
  • Experience creating or reviewing CAD models and dimensioned engineering drawings.
  • Familiarity with GD&T.
  • Familiarity with model-based definition.
  • Academic, project, internship, or work experience involving aircraft, mechanical systems, manufacturing, prototype hardware, or test support.

Why Join Us

  • Work alongside elite engineering talent and innovators from across aerospace and tech.
  • Be part of a team moving faster than the industry standard.
  • Shape solutions that are lower-cost, autonomous, and scalable - the future of aviation.
  • Competitive compensation, including equity participation, growth opportunities, and full health benefits (health, vision, dental, 401(k)) designed to support you in and out of work.
