How much do energy modeling jobs pay per year?
What is an Energy Modeling job?
An Energy Modeling job involves using software and analytical techniques to simulate the energy performance of buildings, systems, or industrial processes. Energy modelers assess energy consumption, efficiency measures, and cost-saving opportunities to optimize performance and sustainability. They work with architects, engineers, and policymakers to support energy-efficient design and compliance with regulatory standards.
What are the typical daily tasks and collaborative aspects of an Energy Modeling position?
As an Energy Modeler, your daily tasks often include developing and calibrating building energy models, interpreting architectural and mechanical drawings, and preparing simulation reports to guide design decisions. You will frequently collaborate with architects, engineers, and sustainability consultants to evaluate various energy-saving strategies and ensure compliance with relevant codes and certifications. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as you’ll present findings, answer technical questions, and sometimes participate in client meetings. This cross-disciplinary environment offers plenty of opportunities to learn from other professionals and contribute to sustainable building solutions.
How much does energy modeling cost?
How much do energy modelers make?
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Energy Modeling position, and why are they important?
To thrive in Energy Modeling, you need a strong understanding of building physics, HVAC systems, and energy codes, typically supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with industry-standard software such as EnergyPlus, eQUEST, or IES VE, as well as credentials like LEED accreditation, is highly valued. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and strong communication skills are important soft skills for this role. These abilities ensure accurate modeling results and effective collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to optimize energy efficiency in building projects.

Building on our expertise in energy efficiency, we're constantly expanding our portfolio of clean energy solutions to guide utilities through increasingly complex, connected challenges. Load flexibility. Electrification. Carbon reduction. With every step, we're leading the charge to power change.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Supports implementation of both prescriptive and custom energy efficiency projects. Support may include completing energy modeling, economic analysis, and/or simulation to quantify energy impacts of recommendations (using spreadsheets and/or energy modeling software), developing project scopes, summarizing implementation details, and/or explaining impacts on operations.
- Conducts energy analysis for projects at medium to large commercial and industrial facilities to identify and recommend energy efficiency improvements in a variety of facility energy using systems (lighting, HVAC, compressed air, refrigeration, process heating, plastic molding or forming, motors, boilers, pumping, food processing, etc.).
- Writes technical reports summarizing results from energy assessments to quantify project economics (energy savings, cost savings, project cost, potential incentive, simple payback, etc.).
- Conducts measurement and verification (M&V) site visits to establish facility energy usage patterns, identify potential energy savings opportunities, and verify installation of energy savings projects. M&V tasks may include installing field monitoring equipment / data loggers, collecting BAS trend data, completing functional performance tests, obtaining BAS screenshots and equipment photos, and discussing project implementation with the customer and contractor.
- Communicates, coordinates, and assists project stakeholders and participants including program staff, contractors, and utility customers to help ensure customers are maximizing the benefits of utility programs.
- Delivers professional, high-quality services and builds a quick rapport with utility customers.
