Energy Assistance Caseworker
Organization Overview
The Office of Home Energy Programs (OHEP) provides bill assistance to low-income households in the State of Maryland to make their energy costs more affordable. This contractual position is located at the Queen Annes County Department of Social Services.
Role Summary
The Energy Assistance Caseworker evaluates energy assistance applications and determines eligibility in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations to provide vital home energy support to Maryland residents.
ResponsibilitiesClient Assessment and Eligibility
- Conduct intake interviews to evaluate a household's energy, financial, and crisis needs.
- Review verification documents like income proofs, identification, and utility bills.
- Determine program qualification for specific initiatives and programs (MEAP, ESUP, GARA, CRISIS).
Case Management and Coordination
- Process and track energy assistance applications through their full application cycle.
- Coordinate directly with utility companies to prevent service shut-offs or expedite emergency grants.
- Provide outreach, energy counseling and conservation education to help lower household energy burdens.
Administration and Documentation
- Maintain accurate, compliant case records and update state database systems.
- Manage crisis declarations and submit required administrative or fair hearing paperwork when disputes happen.
- Refer clients to other relevant state or local programs like SNAP or temporary cash aid if extra support is needed.
Qualifications
- Education: Graduation from an accredited high school.
- Experience: No prior experience required.
Benefits & Compensation
- Salary: $21.00 - $24.00 per hour.
- Benefits: Health care coverage, paid holidays, and earned leave.
