Emergency Management Internship information

What is an emergency management internship?

An Emergency Management Internship is a temporary position designed to provide students or recent graduates with hands-on experience in the field of emergency management. Interns typically work with government agencies, non-profit organizations, or private companies to assist with disaster preparedness, response planning, risk assessment, and community outreach. The internship offers practical exposure to the procedures and protocols used during emergencies such as natural disasters, public health crises, or other hazards. It is an excellent way to gain valuable skills and insights into the profession, often serving as a stepping stone toward a full-time career in emergency management.

What do I do during an emergency management internship?

As an Emergency Management Intern, you can expect to assist with creating and updating emergency preparedness plans, participate in training exercises, and help coordinate community outreach efforts. Interns often support data analysis, research best practices, and collaborate with local agencies and first responders. You'll gain exposure to the day-to-day operations of an emergency management team and may also contribute to after-action reports following drills or actual incidents. This hands-on experience provides valuable insight into the field and helps build practical skills for future roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed for an emergency management internship?

To thrive as an Emergency Management Intern, you need foundational knowledge of emergency preparedness, risk assessment, and crisis response, often supported by coursework in emergency management, public safety, or a related field. Familiarity with incident command systems (ICS), emergency communication platforms, and tools like FEMA’s NIMS is typically expected. Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills help interns collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders and respond calmly under pressure. These skills and qualifications are essential to support coordinated, effective emergency response and ensure community safety during crises.

While internships serve as a stepping stone, coordinators hold more advanced responsibilities and require relevant education and certifications.

Does FEMA do internships?

FEMA offers internships in emergency management and related fields for students and recent graduates. These internships provide hands-on experience in disaster response, planning, and recovery, often requiring applicants to be enrolled in or recent graduates of relevant programs. Internships typically involve a structured schedule and may require security clearances or background checks.

How to get experience in emergency management internship?

To gain experience in an emergency management internship, candidates should pursue relevant coursework in emergency management, public safety, or related fields, and seek internships through government agencies, non-profits, or private organizations. Developing skills in communication, problem-solving, and familiarity with emergency management software or protocols can enhance prospects. Certifications such as FEMA's Emergency Management Institute courses can also improve qualifications.

What kind of jobs can I get with a degree in emergency management?

A degree in emergency management can lead to roles such as emergency management coordinator, disaster response planner, risk analyst, or public safety officer. These jobs often require skills in crisis communication, planning, and familiarity with emergency management software and protocols.
