Primary Purpose of Position
The Operations Manager provides strategic oversight of departmental operations in the Department of Animal Sciences, supporting teaching, research, and student success initiatives. This role ensures effective asset management, space and facilities planning, and regulatory compliance, while serving as a key advisor to the Department Chair. The incumbent coordinates with university offices to maintain safe, functional, and innovative environments that align with institutional goals, including the pursuit of R1 research status.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
N.C. A&T is a public, land-grant, doctoral research institution and has been the largest historically Black university in the country for the past decade. With an enrollment of 14,311 students in Fall 2024, the university offers 59 undergraduate degree programs, 36 master's programs, and 12 doctoral programs. It is America's top producer of Black graduates in Engineering and Agricultural Science bachelor's programs, as well as a top five producer in numerous additional disciplines, including Liberal Arts and Communications/Journalism. It also ranks no. 3 in master's degrees awarded to Black graduates in Engineering Technologies and Related Fields, no. 4 in master's degrees in Engineering, and no. 11 best business school for women in the nation.
Nationally recognized for its leadership and excellence in STEM education and research, N.C. A&T is classified as "R2-High Research Activity" in the Carnegie Classifications and is poised to achieve "R1-Very High Research Activity" status. It also holds Carnegie's earned credential in Community Engagement and the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities (APLU) Innovation and Economic Prosperity designation. The CAES offers 9 BS degrees, 3 MS degrees and 1 PhD and educates over 1200 students. BS degrees include: Agricultural and Environmental Systems, Agricultural Education, Animal Science, Biological Engineering, Child Development and Family Studies, Family and Consumer Sciences, Food and Nutritional Sciences, Laboratory Animal Science and Landscape Architecture. The graduate programs include MS in Agricultural Education, MS in Agricultural and Environmental Systems and MS in Food and Nutritional Sciences, and the new interdisciplinary PhD in Agriculture and Environmental Sciences with 5 concentrations.
The Department of Animal Sciences' mission is to provide high quality multi- disciplinary resident and outreach instruction in animal sciences, conduct research in animal, lab animal sciences, biomedicine and biotechnology. It is one of the largest academic departments within the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciencesand offers three B.S. degrees and two certificate programs. There are 9 active research labs with active projects in the areas of animal nutrition and health; infectious disease; immunology and vaccinology; food security; sustainable livestock production, reproductive technology; meat science and muscle biology, bioinformatics, and genomic diversity of farm animals.
Minimum Requirements
Bachelor's degree in a STEM area with at least two years of laboratory research experience;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of research compliance standards, including laboratory safety protocols, equipment maintenance, and environmental health regulations.
  • Experience designing and implementing training programs, especially in academic or research settings.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills with an attention to detail and accuracy
  • The ability to manage multiple priorities and collaborate across units.
  • All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
Master's degree in a STEM area
  • 3-5 years of laboratory research experience or experience in operations management, laboratory oversight, facilities coordination.
  • Experience working in a university or research-intensive environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams and work effectively with faculty, staff, students, and external partners.
