What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility) Power Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an EMC Power Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, knowledge of electromagnetic compatibility principles, and experience with power systems design. Familiarity with tools like spectrum analyzers, EMC test equipment, and certifications such as CISPR, IEC, or FCC compliance are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help engineers diagnose issues and work collaboratively with cross-functional teams. These competencies are essential to ensure that power systems meet regulatory standards and function reliably without causing or suffering from electromagnetic interference.

What is an EMC Power engineer?

An EMC Power engineer is a professional who specializes in electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) within power systems and electronic devices. Their primary role is to ensure that electrical and electronic equipment operates without causing or being affected by electromagnetic interference (EMI). This involves designing, testing, and implementing solutions that minimize interference and comply with relevant regulatory standards. EMC Power engineers work in industries such as telecommunications, automotive, aerospace, and consumer electronics. They play a crucial role in product development, safety, and regulatory compliance.

What is the difference between Emc Power vs Power Systems Engineer?

Emc Power typically refers to companies or roles involved in electrical power systems, focusing on power generation and distribution. Power Systems Engineers design, analyze, and maintain electrical power systems. While both roles involve electrical expertise, Emc Power often relates to the company or industry, whereas Power Systems Engineer is a specific job title focused on engineering tasks within that industry.

What are some common challenges faced by EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility) Power Engineers, and how can they be addressed in daily work?

EMC Power Engineers often encounter challenges related to minimizing electromagnetic interference (EMI) while ensuring power systems meet regulatory standards. This involves troubleshooting unexpected EMI issues in prototypes, staying updated with evolving compliance requirements, and collaborating closely with design, testing, and manufacturing teams to implement effective shielding and filtering solutions. Staying proactive through regular team communication and continuous learning about new EMC mitigation techniques can help engineers address these challenges efficiently and ensure project success.

Job description

Description
Venturi Astrolab, Inc. (Astrolab) is pioneering new ways to explore and operate on distant planetary bodies. We are singularly focused on designing, building, and operating a fleet of multi-purpose commercial planetary rovers to extend and enhance humanityโ€™s presence in the solar system. We are seeking motivated, creative, and exceptional people to join our world-class team.ย  ย
As an EMC Engineer, you will be responsible for ensuring Avionics components are designed to endure the harsh electromagnetic environmental effects of interplanetary space. You will play a pivotal role in defining the design criteria for state-of-the-art avionics and electro-mechanical systems for the lunar surface with a strong focus on electromagnetic compatibility, in-space charging effects, and interdisciplinary requirements. You will be joining a company at the ground-level and have immense influence over the future of lunar exploration.ย

What you'll do:
  • Collaborate closely within cross-functional Engineering teams to capture requirements, lead design trades with respect to EMI/EMC, and integrate the design into the rover systems.ย
  • Contribute to full avionics and electro-mechanical systems/subsystems from system to component level with specific focus on E3 design criteria and operational/survivability requirements.ย
  • Analyze and contribute to designs relating to the effects of circuit and power system grounding architectures, structural electrical bonding, circuit isolation, shielding effectiveness, radiated/conducted emissions and susceptibility, near field/far field electromagnetics, transient protection, signal and power integrity, and general RF compatibility.ย
  • Troubleshoot EMI issues from board to system level.ย
  • Operate and automate a variety of EMI, RF, and electronics test equipment (spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, signal generation, oscilloscopes) within the context of avionics development and in house EMC testing.ย
  • Create and update technical documentation including command media, system diagrams, schematics, interface control documents, procedures, work and/or build orders, vendor and payload requirements, and test/anomaly reports.ย
  • Support flight hardware component qualification and spacecraft integration testing, including production issue dispositions, troubleshooting failures, and managing overall spacecraft risk.ย

What you'll bring:
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in electrical engineering, physics, or other engineering discipline.ย
  • 5+ years of experience in EMI/EMC requirements, analysis, design, and testing for spacecraft systems and/or avionics component design (academic and personal projects apply). ย
  • Proficient in the use of lab equipment such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, signal generators, logic analyzers, etc.ย
  • Proficient with Analytics/Modeling/Simulation tools such as LTSpice, and experience with electrical circuit analysis using simulation tools such as Spice or equivalent.ย
  • Familiarity with SMC-S-016 testing requirements, and testing per SMC-S-016.ย
  • Knowledge of electrical safety and EMC commercial compliance standards and/or testing.ย
  • MIL-STD-461 experience across the full range of EMC test (radiated susceptibility, radiated emissions, conducted susceptibility, conducted emissions) standards.ย
  • Experience in high power avionics system designs for spacecraft including: LDO Regulators, Buck/Boost converters, power line filters and various spacecraft grounding schemes for high voltage systems.ย
