Job Description:

Summary:

We are seeking an experienced Test Engineer II - Electrical Controls to lead and support the development, validation, and quality assurance of AAON control solutions. This role focuses on embedded firmware, UI software, electrical hardware, and HVAC system-level testing, ensuring products meet functional, performance, connectivity, and regulatory requirements.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Product Development & Collaboration

Work directly with New Product Development (NPD) teams to support a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Collaborate with embedded software, UI, electrical hardware, cloud, production, field service, sales, and customers.

Participate in design reviews and support design documentation including specifications, DFMEA, risk analysis, and validation reports.

Testing & Validation

Develop, execute, and maintain test plans and procedures for embedded firmware, UI software, electrical controls, and HVAC systems.

Perform functional, regression, integration, system, and performance testing.

Validate communication interfaces and protocols including BACnet, Modbus, UART, T1L, and MQTT.

Conduct compliance and regulatory testing to ensure products meet industry standards.

Debugging & Issue Resolution

Diagnose and troubleshoot complex system issues using digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, protocol analyzers, and debuggers.

Perform defect tracking, fault isolation, and root-cause analysis.

Translate technical findings into clear feedback for technical and non-technical audiences.

Documentation & Process Improvement

Prepare and maintain test documentation including test reports, defect logs, and validation summaries.

Contribute to improving QA methodologies, test coverage, efficiency, and repeatability.

Technical Support & Mentorship

Provide technical guidance and support to engineers and cross-functional teams.

Assist with system integration testing, production support, and post-launch field investigations.

Education & Experience Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field with 5+ years of HVAC controls or embedded systems experience; OR a Technical Diploma in HVAC or Integrated Electronics with 10+ years of HVAC controls experience.

Certificates & Licenses:

Valid driver's license with ability to travel independently to job sites as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong understanding of HVAC controls, building automation systems, and electrical fundamentals.

  • Ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams and schematics.

  • Ability to communicate complex technical information clearly.

  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

  • Familiarity with JIRA, DevOps, AutoCAD, Visio, or similar tools is preferred.

Work Environment:

  • Ability to lift to 50 lbs.

  • Ability to sit for extended periods and work in lab and field environments.

  • Ability to climb ladders or use lift equipment over 8 feet above grade.

  • Some travel is expected for cross-training between locations, product reviews, and field investigations.

Primary work environment is office and lab based. Occasional travel may involve rooftop equipment, outdoor conditions, and exposure to electrical hazards.
