Embedded System Engineer Hybrid information

What is an embedded system engineer hybrid?

An Embedded System Engineer Hybrid is a professional who designs, develops, and maintains embedded systems—specialized computing systems that perform dedicated functions within larger electrical or mechanical systems—while working in a hybrid work environment (both remotely and onsite). These engineers typically work on hardware-software integration, real-time operating systems, and device drivers. The hybrid aspect allows for flexibility in work location, enabling collaboration with team members both in-person and virtually. This role often requires strong skills in programming languages like C/C++, knowledge of microcontrollers, and familiarity with hardware interfaces.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an embedded system engineer hybrid?

To thrive as an Embedded System Engineer (Hybrid), you need a solid background in computer engineering, embedded C/C++ programming, and experience with hardware/software integration, usually backed by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with RTOS, microcontrollers, debugging tools, and version control systems like Git is typically required, and certifications such as Certified Embedded Systems Engineer can be advantageous. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective teamwork, and clear communication are essential soft skills for collaborating on complex projects and troubleshooting issues. These skills ensure reliable system performance, seamless cross-functional collaboration, and innovative solutions in dynamic product development environments.

How does working as an embedded system engineer in a hybrid environment impact daily collaboration and project workflows?

As an Embedded System Engineer in a hybrid setting, you'll typically split your time between onsite work—such as hardware testing or integration—and remote tasks like coding and documentation. This structure encourages frequent virtual collaboration with software, hardware, and QA teams using digital tools, while still allowing critical in-person sessions for lab work or troubleshooting. Effective communication and proactive project management are essential to ensure smooth handoffs and alignment across distributed teams. The hybrid model offers flexibility, but also requires strong organizational skills to stay connected and productive across locations.

What is the difference between Embedded System Engineer Hybrid vs Embedded Software Engineer?

Search & Comparison IntentYesYes

Embedded System Engineer Hybrid focuses on both hardware and software integration, often working across multiple platforms and environments. Embedded Software Engineer primarily concentrates on developing firmware and software for embedded devices. While both roles require similar technical skills and certifications, their work environments and industry applications differ slightly, with the hybrid role being more hardware-inclusive.

Job ID: 163887

Job Description: The Senior Systems Engineer plays a critical role in understanding system level requirements, architecting, analyzing through suitable techniques, specifying, conducting feasibility studies, and staying involved in the project through the course of integration. This involves participating in tasks such as functional specification, testing, formal verification, failure analysis, and sustaining engineering.

The position requires expertise, hands‑on skills, and experience in areas such as digital logic, analog circuits, power subsystems, and hardware debugging with real‑time embedded code. Systems engineering is a central role that spans the lifecycle of product development from requirements gathering to manufacturing transfer and post‑market surveillance.

Responsibilities
  • Working with Marketing, Project Management and other R&D groups to guide requirements and generate product specifications.
  • Obtain a system level view to drive tradeoff analysis during product development while considering features, schedules, cost, complexity, evaluating how radical or incremental the change is, risk and usability.
  • Conduct feasibility work on product / system components and features in area of technical expertise. Study and be able to propose suitable components, algorithms and solutions at the least in the area of expertise. Also be able model/implement the proposals using suitable techniques and tools.
  • Work with Electrical (RF, Board & IC), Firmware, Software and Mechanical teams during the product development and system integration phase.
  • Work with R&T and other R&D groups to define architectures for future products and systems with a solid understanding of market needs.
  • Be willing and capable of developing a broad level of understanding of our products, their higher level architecture (hardware and software) and also specialize in certain technical segments.
  • Be capable of investigating field product issues, or issues during product development, be able to conduct necessary experiments with suitable techniques to get to the root cause of the issues at the shortest possible time.
  • Be willing and forthcoming in clearly documenting the work undertaken not only with a goal to document but also with a goal in mind to educate the newcomers and rest of the organization.
  • Always be willing and effectively share with others in the organization knowledge that has been gained when asked, or as needed to improve the overall skills of the organization.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Electronics, or Biomedical Engineering required; Master’s degree or PhD preferred.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience in analog and digital circuits, FPGA platforms, embedded systems, DSP, RF, control systems, or integrated circuits, with 7+ years of experience and prior medical device industry experience considered a plus.
  • Strong collaboration, communication, and leadership skills with the ability to work effectively across all organizational levels, mentor junior engineers, perform under pressure, and meet project deadlines in cross‑functional environments.
  • Expertise in the design and development of complex electronic systems, including embedded development on ASICs, test automation using Python, datasheet interpretation, reliability and verification engineering, and Class III medical device standards (IEC 60801 and related requirements).
  • Demonstrated analytical problem‑solving abilities, attention to detail, and the capability to develop practical solutions to complex technical challenges.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Altium 365, circuit simulation and modeling tools (e.g., SPICE), and coding/scripting tools such as C, C++, LabVIEW, and Python for automation, testing, and debugging.
  • Experience with FPGA design tools (Xilinx Vivado, Altera Quartus), embedded software development environments (Arduino, MPLAB, Keil, Eclipse), and data analysis and visualization tools including MATLAB, Tableau, Python, and related engineering software; familiarity with MATLAB, Python Embedded Tools, pSPICE, VHDL/Verilog, System C, and C/C++ is highly desirable.
