Job Description
The Secure Boot & Firmware Security Engineer will lead the development, integration, and validation of secure boot and firmware security solutions for safety-critical systems. This role supports firmware security architecture, encryption services, hardware root of trust implementation, and secure firmware lifecycle management while collaborating with cross-functional engineering and cybersecurity teams.
Responsibilities
Develop, sign, configure, and maintain custom and open-source EFI boot loaders
Lead Secure Boot integration activities, including vendor coordination, documentation, and training development
Perform recovery testing and verification for secure boot and firmware recovery mechanisms
Support PolarFire firmware services related to encryption and hashing algorithms
Develop and maintain user-space APIs for encryption and hashing services
Implement and validate hardware root of trust features, including fuse configuration and testing
Manage firmware update planning, execution, and lifecycle verification activities
Design and develop custom Secure Boot UEFI applications
Configure, test, and validate secure boot loaders for reliable system startup
Collaborate with cybersecurity, firmware, hardware, and software engineering teams
Develop technical documentation and deliver training related to firmware security processes
Stay current with cybersecurity best practices, secure boot technologies, and firmware security trends
Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience)
Bachelorโs or Masterโs degree in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Electrical Engineering, or related technical field
7+ years of experience with secure boot loader development, signing, and configuration including UEFI Secure Boot
Strong knowledge of firmware security, encryption, hashing algorithms, and hardware root of trust concepts
7+ years of experience with PolarFire FPGA firmware services or similar hardware security platforms
Experience developing and validating firmware updates and secure boot processes
Experience with fuse configuration and hardware security features
Experience developing user-space APIs related to encryption and hashing
Proficiency in C, C++, Python, Bash, or similar scripting/programming languages
Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills
Experience creating technical documentation and delivering technical training
Ability to collaborate across cross-functional teams and external vendors
5+ years of experience with cybersecurity standards and firmware security best practices
Experience working in safety-critical environments with standards such as DO-178C, ISO 26262, or similar
Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience)
Experience supporting certification and compliance activities for safety-critical systems
Experience developing cybersecurity features for regulated or aerospace systems
Familiarity with firmware validation and secure system architecture processes
Strong understanding of embedded systems security and secure firmware lifecycle management
Education & Experience
Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, or Chemistry (e.g., Bachelorโs degree) and typically 9 or more years of related work experience, or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g., PhD + 4 yearsโ related work experience, Masterโs degree + 7 yearsโ related work experience).
In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
