How much do embedded firmware jobs pay per year?

As of Sep 14, 2026, the average yearly pay for embedded firmware in the United States is $122,008.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $103,000.00 and $141,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is an embedded firmware engineer?

Embedded firmware engineers are professionals who design, develop, and maintain the low-level software (firmware) that controls hardware devices. Their work involves writing code that directly interfaces with microcontrollers or processors, enabling devices such as appliances, automotive systems, medical devices, and consumer electronics to function as intended. They often work closely with hardware engineers to ensure seamless integration between hardware and software, optimizing performance and reliability. Embedded firmware engineers typically use programming languages like C or C++ and have a deep understanding of both hardware and software systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an embedded firmware engineer?

To thrive as an Embedded Firmware Engineer, you need a strong background in computer engineering or electrical engineering, with expertise in C/C++ programming, microcontroller architectures, and hardware-software integration. Familiarity with tools like debuggers, oscilloscopes, version control systems (e.g., Git), and industry certifications such as Certified Embedded Systems Engineer can be beneficial. Problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for diagnosing issues and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These skills and qualities are vital for developing reliable, efficient firmware that meets product requirements and ensures seamless operation of embedded devices.

What are some common challenges faced by embedded firmware engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Embedded firmware engineers often encounter challenges such as resource constraints, debugging hardware-software interactions, and ensuring real-time performance. Working within limited memory and processing power requires efficient coding practices and thorough optimization. Additionally, close collaboration with hardware teams is essential to troubleshoot issues that may arise from tight integration with physical components. Staying updated with the latest tools and methodologies, along with strong problem-solving skills, helps address these challenges effectively.

What is the difference between Embedded Firmware vs Embedded Software Developer?

AspectEmbedded FirmwareEmbedded Software Developer
CredentialsTypically requires embedded systems or electronics background, often with certifications in embedded systemsRequires programming skills, often with degrees in computer science or software engineering
Work EnvironmentHardware-focused, working closely with microcontrollers, sensors, and hardware componentsSoftware-focused, developing applications that run on embedded systems
Industry UsageUsed in consumer electronics, automotive, medical devices, and industrial equipmentDevelops software for embedded systems across various industries

Embedded Firmware specialists focus on programming low-level code directly on hardware devices, often requiring hardware knowledge. Embedded Software Developers create higher-level software that runs on embedded systems, emphasizing coding and application development. Both roles are essential in embedded systems development but differ in scope and focus.

Job description

Eaton's Electrical Critical Power Solutions (CPS) Division is seeking an Embedded Firmware Specialist to join our team in Raleigh, NC. Relocation benefits will be provided within the United States only. Work sponsorship is available for this position.

This position will be a hybrid office (3 days in-office, 2 days remote) role, and candidates must live within 50 miles of our Raleigh, NC facility. Salaries are based upon candidate skills, experience, and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations. What you'll do: Eaton Critical Power Solutions division is currently seeking an Embedded Firmware Specialist to join our team. This is a senior individual contributor role with broad influence across the global teams within the division.

As an Embedded Firmware Specialist, you will contribute to shaping and evolving the firmware architecture for Eaton's nextgeneration and sustaining platforms across threephase UPS, energy transition, and EV charging product lines. You will collaborate with senior engineers and crossfunctional teams to drive alignment across platforms, influence key technical decisions, and support solutions that balance performance, reliability, safety, cybersecurity, and longterm maintainability. In this role, you will work closely with global products, controls, hardware, and verification teams, helping guide technological direction across current and future Critical Power Solutions products and platforms.

Job Responsibilities: Contribute to the successful delivery of critical power solutions' products that meet customer expectations and Eaton's safety, quality, reliability, cost, and schedule objectives. Collaborate with cross functional teams to define requirements and support system level designs for three phase UPS systems, high power DC chargers, energy storage, and related power electronics products. Shape and evolve firmware architecture across platforms and product variants, including interfaces, modular structure, and key non functional requirements such as timing, reliability, safety, and maintainability.

Lead architecture and design reviews; set engineering standards; and align practices across global regions and projects. Partner with product managers and technical product owners to shape requirements, establish platform roadmap, and drive sustaining releases and next-gen platform plans. Work closely with controls and hardware teams to enable effective hardware software co design and robust embedded implementations.

Partner with V&V teams to help identify appropriate verification methods, including HIL/PIL strategies, design verification planning, and diagnostic approaches, and support traceability from requirements to test evidence. Provide technical leadership during critical issues, supporting root cause analysis and continuous improvement. Keep current on embedded firmware practices and relevant industry standards; integrate pragmatic improvements into Eaton's firmware processes.

Qualifications: Basic Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an accredited institution. Minimum 8 years of embedded software/firmware development experience using C/C++ in real time systems. Minimum 5 years of experience defining firmware architecture or leading firmware design for complex, multiteam or multi product embedded platforms.

Minimum 3 years of experience with RTOS based development (e.g., FreeRTOS, Zephyr, or equivalent). Minimum 2 years of experience developing firmware for power electronics systems (three phase UPS, inverter/rectifier, DC DC controls, power conversion topologies) or adjacent high reliability embedded domains. Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree or PhD in Electrical or Software Engineering

Experience developing control algorithms using model based or auto code generation tools (e.g., Simulink, Stateflow). Experience with embedded Linux. Hands on experience with firmware and controls validation using HIL platforms (e.g., OPAL RT)

Skills: Strong understanding of power systems and power electronics domains. Experience working in regulated or security conscious environments, applying secure development practices. Ability to read and interpret low level hardware specifications and schematics.
