How much do electrical engineering technology jobs pay per year?

As of Jul 13, 2026, the average yearly pay for electrical engineering technology in Indiana is $105,710.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $79,000.00 and $125,600.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is Electrical Engineering Technology?

Electrical Engineering Technology is a field that focuses on the practical application of electrical engineering principles. It involves designing, developing, testing, and maintaining electrical and electronic systems, such as circuits, devices, and equipment. Professionals in this field often work on implementing and troubleshooting technology in industries like manufacturing, telecommunications, and energy. Unlike electrical engineers, technologists typically concentrate more on applied aspects and hands-on work rather than theoretical design. This makes Electrical Engineering Technology a key link between engineering concepts and real-world solutions.

What can I do with an electrical engineering technology degree?

An electrical engineering technology degree prepares graduates for roles such as electrical technician, systems installer, maintenance engineer, or project technician. These positions involve designing, testing, installing, and maintaining electrical systems and equipment, often requiring knowledge of circuit design, troubleshooting, and relevant tools like CAD software. Certification and hands-on experience can enhance job prospects in industries like manufacturing, telecommunications, and energy.

What career can I do with electrical technology?

With a background in electrical engineering technology, you can pursue careers such as electrical technician, systems installer, maintenance engineer, or electrical designer. These roles often involve working with electrical systems, circuit design, and troubleshooting in industries like manufacturing, construction, or energy, and may require knowledge of tools like CAD software and safety certifications.

Can you make $500,000 as an electrical engineer?

Electrical engineering technology roles typically do not reach $500,000 annually; such high salaries are usually associated with senior engineering positions, management roles, or specialized consulting, often requiring extensive experience, advanced skills, and sometimes additional certifications. Most electrical engineers earn a median salary significantly below that figure, though top earners in certain industries or locations may approach high six-figure incomes.

What is the work of electrical engineering technology?

Electrical engineering technologists design, develop, test, and maintain electrical systems and equipment, such as circuits, control systems, and power distribution. They often work with tools like oscilloscopes and CAD software and may assist engineers in project implementation and troubleshooting. Their work environment includes laboratories, manufacturing plants, and construction sites, and they typically require technical certifications or associate degrees.

What is the difference between Electrical Engineering Technology vs Electrical Engineering?

AspectElectrical Engineering TechnologyElectrical Engineering
EducationAssociate's or Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering TechnologyBachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering
CertificationsOptional certifications like Certified Engineering Technician (CET)Professional Engineer (PE) license often required
Work EnvironmentPractical, hands-on roles in manufacturing, maintenance, and testingTheoretical, design-focused roles in research, development, and system design
Job ResponsibilitiesImplementing designs, troubleshooting, testing, and maintaining electrical systemsDesigning systems, analyzing complex problems, developing new technologies

Electrical Engineering Technology professionals focus on applying electrical principles in practical settings, while Electrical Engineers are more involved in designing and developing new electrical systems and technologies. Both roles are essential in the industry, but they differ in education, responsibilities, and career paths.

What are some typical projects or tasks an Electrical Engineering Technologist might work on in a team setting?

Electrical Engineering Technologists often collaborate on projects such as designing and testing electrical systems, troubleshooting equipment, and assisting in the development of prototypes. They work closely with engineers, technicians, and other team members to ensure systems meet safety and performance standards. Daily responsibilities can include drafting layouts, assembling and testing components, and documenting results, often requiring clear communication and problem-solving within a multidisciplinary team. This collaborative environment not only enhances technical skills but also provides valuable experience for career advancement.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Electrical Engineering Technologist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electrical Engineering Technologist, a solid understanding of electrical theory, circuit design, troubleshooting, and typically an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering technology are essential. Familiarity with industry-standard tools like oscilloscopes, multimeters, AutoCAD, and PLC programming, as well as certifications such as CET (Certified Engineering Technologist), is often required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help technologists excel in team environments and client interactions. These competencies are crucial for ensuring the safe, efficient, and innovative development, testing, and maintenance of electrical systems.
