What does an electrical design manager do?

An Electrical Design Manager oversees the planning, design, and implementation of electrical systems in various projects, such as buildings, infrastructure, or manufacturing facilities. They lead a team of engineers and designers, ensuring that all electrical designs meet safety standards, client specifications, and regulatory requirements. Their responsibilities also include coordinating with other engineering disciplines, managing project timelines and budgets, and providing technical guidance throughout the project lifecycle.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an electrical design manager?

To thrive as an Electrical Design Manager, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, project management experience, and typically a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software, electrical design tools (such as AutoCAD, Revit, or ETAP), and relevant industry standards or certifications (like PE licensure) is crucial. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills help manage teams, coordinate across departments, and drive project success. These capabilities ensure effective design solutions, compliance with safety and quality standards, and successful project delivery.

How does an electrical design manager typically collaborate with other engineering disciplines and project stakeholders?

An Electrical Design Manager works closely with mechanical, civil, and architectural teams to ensure that electrical systems are seamlessly integrated into overall project designs. Regular coordination meetings and design reviews are common, where the manager communicates requirements, resolves conflicts, and aligns project milestones. Additionally, they often interact with clients, contractors, and regulatory bodies to ensure compliance and address specific project needs. Effective collaboration and clear communication are essential skills in this role, as successful outcomes depend on cross-disciplinary teamwork.

What is the difference between Electrical Design Manager vs Electrical Engineer?

AspectElectrical Design ManagerElectrical Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, often with management certificationsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering
Work EnvironmentLeads design teams, oversees project planning, and coordinates with clientsPerforms design, analysis, and testing of electrical systems
Industry UsageUsed in project management, design oversight, and team leadership rolesUsed in technical design, development, and implementation tasks

The main difference is that an Electrical Design Manager focuses on leading design teams and managing projects, while an Electrical Engineer is primarily involved in technical design and analysis. Both roles require strong electrical engineering credentials, but the manager role adds leadership and project oversight responsibilities.

Are electrical design managers in demand?

Electrical design managers are in demand due to ongoing infrastructure development, renewable energy projects, and technological advancements requiring specialized electrical systems. They typically need strong technical skills, project management experience, and relevant certifications, making their role critical in various industries such as construction, manufacturing, and energy.

Job description

Staff High Voltage Electrical Engineer (EPC) — Build the Backbone of American Clean Energy

Carson City, NV | Full-Time | $150,000 – $190,000

The Opportunity

Substations, transmission interconnections, grid-scale storage — if designing serious high voltage infrastructure is your thing, this is your role. Our client, a fast-growing clean energy innovator, is hiring a Staff High Voltage Electrical Engineer to lead the design of 69kV–345kV substations and serve as Engineer of Record on projects central to domestic clean energy production. You'll own design packages from first concept through commissioning.

Why You'll Love It

  • Big-iron scope: Transmission-level substations, utility and ISO/RTO interconnections, and BESS integration
  • Ownership, not oversight: Independent EOR authority on your projects
  • Nevada advantage: No state income tax, and Carson City living minutes from Lake Tahoe
  • Impact you can point to: Infrastructure that directly powers the energy transition

What You'll Do

  • Lead design of high voltage AC systems — industrial substations (69kV–345kV) integrated with transmission lines and MV distribution
  • Develop single-line diagrams, physical layouts, protection and control systems, relay coordination, and grounding plans
  • Perform grid simulation and stability studies (PSSE, PSLF, PSCAD, ASPEN OneLiner) plus short circuit, load flow, and arc flash analysis
  • Work directly with utilities and ISO/RTOs on interconnection studies, permitting, and compliance
  • Develop SEL relay settings and select HV equipment — switchgear, breakers, transformers, reactors, PTs/CTs, protection relays
  • Lead NEC, IEEE, NESC, and NFPA compliance reviews
  • Support construction and commissioning with field engineering, testing, and troubleshooting
  • Lead R&D into medium voltage DC distribution for BESS integration
  • Manage scope, schedule, budget, and cost estimates across your design packages
  • Mentor junior engineers and set team design standards

What You'll Bring

  • BS/MS in Electrical Engineering (ABET)
  • Active PE (Nevada or reciprocity-eligible); NV and SC licensure within 2 months of start
  • 10+ years of high voltage electrical design, EPC background preferred
  • Advanced proficiency: PSSE/PSLF, PSCAD/EMTP, SEL AcSELerator, ASPEN OneLiner, ETAP/SKM, AutoCAD, Navisworks, Bluebeam
  • Bonus points: HVDC/converter station design, SCADA/substation automation, field commissioning experience
  • A passion for sustainability and building things that last
