Controls Design Engineer
Position Overview
We are seeking a skilled Controls Design Engineer to develop and deliver electrical control systems for industrial machinery and automation projects. The role focuses on designing control panels, creating schematic and layout drawings, ensuring compliance with applicable codes and standards, and collaborating with project teams to support installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting. The ideal candidate combines strong electrical design experience with practical knowledge of PLCs, NFPA, UL 508A, and industrial power systems.
Key Responsibilities

  • Develop detailed electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and control panel layouts using AutoCAD Electrical and EPLAN.
  • Design and specify control systems for AC and DC electrical systems, including component selection and bill of materials.
  • Create NEC-compliant layouts and ensure designs meet NFPA standards and UL 508A requirements for industrial control panels.
  • Design and document I/O lists, ladder logic architecture, and PLC integration strategies in coordination with controls engineers and programmers.
  • Design hydraulic and pneumatic control interfaces and indicate where electromechanical and fluid power systems interact.
  • Prepare enclosure and panel fabrication documentation, including cutouts, mounting, and thermal/ventilation considerations.
  • Perform design reviews, risk assessments, and verification of electrical designs for functionality, safety, and maintainability.
  • Support procurement by preparing technical specifications, reviewing vendor documentation, and evaluating component alternatives.
  • Coordinate with mechanical and manufacturing teams to ensure panel and cable routing integration with machine layouts.
  • Provide technical support during factory acceptance tests, site installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting activities.
  • Maintain and update project documentation, as-built drawings, and change control records throughout project lifecycle.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years of experience in controls design, electrical engineering, or industrial automation design roles.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD Electrical and EPLAN for schematic and panel layout creation.
  • Strong knowledge of NEC (National Electrical Code) requirements and NFPA standards applicable to industrial control systems.
  • Experience designing AC and DC electrical systems and selecting appropriate components and protective devices.
  • Hands-on experience with PLC systems, I/O integration, and understanding of ladder logic or structured text programming concepts.
  • Familiarity with UL 508A requirements and experience producing compliant control panel documentation.
  • Working knowledge of hydraulics and pneumatics and how they interface with electrical controls.
  • Experience with control panel layout, wiring practices, terminal organization, and cable management.
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and project collaboration skills; ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
