Job Title: Utility DesignerJob DescriptionThe Utility Designer will design and draft utility layouts and specifications for gas and electric distribution projects, using CAD and GPS-based survey tools to produce accurate, compliant designs. This role involves conducting site visits, collaborating closely with project teams, and supporting the coordination and implementation of utility construction projects while ensuring adherence to industry standards and regulations.
Responsibilities
- Design and draft utility layouts and specifications for gas and electric distribution systems.
- Prepare detailed project drawings using CAD and other design software tools.
- Conduct site visits to assess project requirements and gather relevant field data.
- Use GPS survey equipment, such as Trimble GPS, to collect and analyze site data for utility design projects.
- Collaborate with project teams to ensure designs comply with applicable utility standards and regulations.
- Incorporate GIS and other spatial data into utility design and documentation as needed.
- Assist in the coordination and implementation of utility construction projects, supporting field and office teams.
- Review and update design documents to reflect changes in project scope, site conditions, or regulatory requirements.
- Maintain accurate records of design work, survey data, and project documentation.
- Communicate effectively with internal stakeholders and customer representatives during site visits and project reviews.
Essential Skills- Proficiency in drafting and utility design for gas and electric distribution projects.
- Hands-on experience with AutoCAD for creating and modifying detailed design drawings.
- Experience with MicroStation or similar CAD platforms for utility or infrastructure projects.
- Ability to use Trimble GPS or comparable GPS survey equipment to collect accurate field data.
- Familiarity with GIS tools and concepts to support utility design and mapping.
- Strong understanding of mechanical or civil drafting principles as applied to utility distribution.
- Ability to interpret and apply utility standards, regulations, and design guidelines.
- Willingness and ability to travel to customer sites on a weekly basis.
- Associate's degree in mechanical, drafting, civil, or an equivalent field, or comparable field experience.
Additional Skills & Qualifications- Experience working with gas and electric utilities is preferred.
- Background in distribution design for utility infrastructure is highly beneficial.
- Knowledge of CAD standards and best practices for utility projects.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in drawings, survey data, and documentation.
- Effective communication skills for collaborating with project teams and customer contacts.
- Organizational skills to manage multiple projects, site visits, and design tasks concurrently.
- Ability to adapt to changing project requirements and field conditions.
- Problem-solving skills to address design challenges identified during site assessments or project reviews.
Work EnvironmentThis is an on-site role, working Monday through Friday, with regular weekly travel to customer sites within northern Wisconsin. The position involves a mix of office-based design work using CAD, GIS, and related software, and field-based activities using GPS survey equipment such as Trimble GPS. Site visits may include outdoor work in varying weather and terrain conditions while collecting data and coordinating with customer representatives and project teams. The work environment supports close collaboration with engineering and construction personnel to deliver accurate and constructible utility designs.

Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $26.00 - $28.00/hr.
