Job description

Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Manager New Manufacturing Facility

This role leads the full Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) program for a new, high-growth manufacturing facility. The EHS Manager champions a strong safety culture, drives sustainability initiatives, and builds the strategic roadmap for compliance and continuous improvement. This is a highly visible position with true ground-up ownership of EHS, offering the opportunity to shape culture, systems, and long-term strategy from an early stage.

Responsibilities

  • Champion a Zero Harm safety culture that protects employees, contractors, and customers across the facility.
  • Develop, implement, and continuously refine a strategic EHS roadmap that elevates safety, health, and environmental performance.
  • Lead initiatives to reduce the plant's carbon footprint and enhance sustainability across operations.
  • Plan and deliver EHS training programs to ensure employees understand and follow safety and environmental requirements.
  • Conduct regular EHS audits, inspections, and assessments to verify compliance with OSHA, EPA, and internal standards.
  • Prepare, maintain, and submit required compliance documentation and reports for regulatory agencies and internal stakeholders.
  • Manage workers' compensation processes, including case management and documentation.
  • Lead and coordinate return-to-work programs to support safe and timely employee reintegration.
  • Drive continuous improvement in ergonomics, processes, and EHS awareness throughout the facility.
  • Support and lead incident investigations, root cause analyses, and corrective and preventive actions to maintain top-tier EHS performance.
  • Collaborate closely with regional and national EHS teams to share best practices and align with broader organizational standards.
  • Partner with manufacturing and operations leadership to integrate EHS considerations into daily production activities and long-term planning.
  • Oversee the implementation and maintenance of EHS management systems, including ISO-related standards, to support consistent and auditable processes.
  • Prioritize and manage multiple EHS projects and initiatives independently, ensuring timely execution and follow-through.
  • Communicate EHS expectations, performance metrics, and improvement plans clearly and effectively to all levels of the organization.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as environmental science, occupational health and safety, engineering, or a related discipline.
  • 5+ years of experience in a technical EHS role with a strong focus on safety and environmental compliance.
  • 2+ years of experience in a leadership role within a manufacturing environment.
  • Demonstrated expertise in OSHA and EPA regulations and their application in a manufacturing setting.
  • Proven experience conducting EHS training, audits, and compliance reporting.
  • Experience managing workers' compensation and return-to-work programs.
  • Strong experience in driving continuous improvement in ergonomics, processes, and EHS awareness.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including clear documentation and reporting.
  • Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work effectively with cross-functional and geographically dispersed EHS teams.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Professional certifications such as CSP (Certified Safety Professional), CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist), or CHMM (Certified Hazardous Materials Manager).
  • Experience with EHS management systems, including ISO-based systems (such as ISO 14001 and ISO 45001) or similar frameworks.
  • Experience working in industrial or manufacturing environments, particularly with complex electrical or mechanical systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence and shape safety culture in a growing or startup-like operation.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail in documentation, reporting, and follow-up.
  • Passion for creating safer, more sustainable workplaces and driving measurable improvements over time.

Work Environment

This role is based 100% onsite at a new, growing manufacturing site with a startup feel. The facility focuses on large-scale electrical skids, including switchgear, transformers, and power systems, operating as an assembly and integration environment where components are received, built, and shipped to customers. Business lines are transitioning from an existing location into this new site, creating a high-growth environment with significant investment and ongoing expansion. The position may involve travel at times to a nearby site in Wendell to interface with leadership and align on EHS strategy and best practices. Once the EHS roadmap is established and systems are running effectively, there may be an opportunity for a hybrid work arrangement. The work environment is hands-on and production-focused, requiring regular presence on the shop floor and close interaction with operations, engineering, and leadership teams.
