System Administrator
Location: Fort Belvoir, VA
Security Clearance: Active Secret Security Clearance
Position Overview
Nationwide IT Services (NIS) is seeking an experienced System Administrator to support a Department of Defense customer at Fort Belvoir, VA. This position is responsible for ensuring the reliability, security, and performance of enterprise servers, network infrastructure, and mission-critical systems across multiple operational locations.
The ideal candidate will have extensive experience administering Windows and/or Linux environments, maintaining secure enterprise networks, automating system administration tasks, and providing advanced technical support. This role works closely with network engineers, cybersecurity personnel, and other IT professionals to deliver a stable, highly available infrastructure that supports critical DoD operations.
Key Responsibilities
  • Install, configure, administer, and maintain enterprise servers, operating systems, and network software.
  • Plan, implement, and optimize system configurations to maximize performance, reliability, and availability.
  • Support server installations, upgrades, migrations, and maintenance activities across multiple locations.
  • Monitor system health, troubleshoot performance issues, and resolve complex technical problems.
  • Manage application networking, load balancing, and fault-tolerant system configurations.
  • Perform vulnerability management activities, including identifying, analyzing, and remediating security vulnerabilities.
  • Conduct system capacity planning and performance analysis, recommending hardware and software upgrades as needed.
  • Develop and maintain automation scripts and tools to improve operational efficiency and standardize administrative processes.
  • Create and maintain system administration procedures, technical documentation, and operational standards.
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance to junior system administrators and support personnel.
  • Support end users by resolving advanced software, hardware, and connectivity issues while providing technical guidance and training.
  • Collaborate with network, cybersecurity, and application teams to ensure secure, reliable enterprise operations.
  • Support infrastructure, modernization initiatives and evolving mission requirements.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in information technology, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • Seven (7) to ten (10) years of experience administering enterprise Windows and/or Linux server environments.
  • Active Secret Security Clearance.
  • Current CompTIA Security+ certification (preferred), or Network+ or Certified Network Defender (CND) certification.
  • Experience administering enterprise servers, networking, and operating system environments.
  • Experience performing vulnerability management, system hardening, and security best practices.
  • Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills with the ability to resolve complex infrastructure issues.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting Department of Defense or other Federal Government enterprise environments.
  • Experience with enterprise networking, load balancing, and high-availability system architectures.
  • Knowledge of virtualization technologies, enterprise storage, and backup solutions.
  • Experience with scripting and automation tools such as PowerShell, Bash, or Python.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, DHCP, and enterprise server technologies.
  • Experience supporting data center operations and infrastructure modernization efforts.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to work effectively across cross-functional technical teams.
