What is an ECSE paraprofessional?

ECSE paraprofessionals are educational support staff who assist teachers in Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) classrooms. They help provide instructional, behavioral, and physical support to young children with special needs, typically ages 3 to 5. Their duties often include assisting with classroom activities, supporting individualized education plans (IEPs), and helping students with daily routines. ECSE paraprofessionals work under the supervision of licensed teachers to ensure all students receive appropriate support in a safe, inclusive learning environment.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an ECSE paraprofessional?

To thrive as an ECSE (Early Childhood Special Education) Paraprofessional, you generally need experience or coursework in early childhood education, special education, and often a high school diploma or associate’s degree.
