Job description

Mission: The mission of Philip's Academy Charter school of Paterson (Philip's) is, we will provide a moral and rigorous education to a diverse student body, accomplished in a hands-on, technology infused educational environment that embraces differentiated instruction and individual attention that will allow our students to attend college, while developing a commitment to global citizenship, environmental sustainability, and personal virtue.

Nature and Scope of Job: Under the supervision of the Managing Director of Curriculum and Instruction, the EcoSpace Teacher plans and leads hands-on environmental education lessons transforming our "Eco Space" into a living laboratory where students connect with nature, understand sustainability, and develop a sense of global stewardship. 

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and teach inquiry-based lessons for grades K8 that integrate biology, ecology, environmental science, and other content areas.
  • Facilitate hands-on learning activities such as composting, organic gardening, water conservation, and renewable energy projects.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers and science partners to align EcoSpaces programming with core academic subjects and integrated learning experiences.
  • Oversee and maintain the school's outdoor learning environments, including gardens, greenhouses, hydroponic systems, and wildlife habitats.
  • Manage and strengthen partnerships related to EcoSpaces programming and environmental initiatives.
  • Implement seasonal planting schedules and maintain healthy, sustainable, and chemical-free learning environments.
  • Lead student clubs and school-wide sustainability initiatives, including environmental awareness and campus beautification efforts.
  • Partner with school staff to facilitate parent workshops and family engagement opportunities connected to EcoSpaces programming.
  • Organize community Eco-Days, Earth Day or the like and environmental events involving students, families, and local partners.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with staff and families regarding student learning, achievements, and upcoming EcoSpaces events, including through social media and other outreach platforms.
  • Maintain ongoing professional development related to environmental education, sustainability, and instructional practices.
  • Other duties, responsibilities, and activities may change or be assigned at any time with or without notice from the Principal.

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's Degree in Education, Environmental Science, Horticulture, or a related field; advanced degree in education a plus.
  • Hold a valid NJ State Teacher Certification.
  • Minimum 3 years of teaching experience, specifically in subject area a plus.
  • Commitment to ensuring academic success for all students.
  • Shared dedication to Philip's Academy's philosophy and mission.
  • Excellent teamwork, work ethic, and organizational skills.
  • Communicate effectively in English, both orally and verbally. Bilingual a plus.
  • Possess excellent integrity, a gentle spirit, and demonstrate strong moral character and initiative.
  • Demonstrate technological abilities: word processing, data management, and informational retrieval.
  • Submit a background check through the New Jersey Department of Education.
  • Be CPR, First Aid, and Blood Borne Pathogen certified or obtain certification upon hire.
  • Complete a Tuberculosis test and physical and provide a physician's documentation of both.
  • Be able to kneel, bend, squat, lift, push, pull, and carry students up to 70lbs.
  • Have dependable transportation.

Salary Range:

$64,810.00 - $82,700.00 (Per salary guide)

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with the board's policy on evaluation.
