An Eating Disorder Internship is a supervised, hands-on learning experience for students or early-career professionals interested in eating disorder treatment. Interns may assist with patient support, research, meal monitoring, and administrative tasks in clinical or outpatient settings. This role provides valuable exposure to multidisciplinary treatment approaches, including therapy, nutrition counseling, and medical care. It is ideal for those pursuing careers in psychology, social work, dietetics, or related fields.

What responsibilities can I expect during an eating disorder internship?

As an Eating Disorder Intern, you may assist with intake assessments, support group facilitation, meal supervision, patient observation, and the preparation of educational materials. You'll often work under the guidance of licensed therapists, dietitians, or counselors, providing both administrative and direct support to clients in outpatient or inpatient settings. Interns typically gain experience with clinical documentation and may participate in case discussions with the treatment team. This hands-on exposure is invaluable for developing practical skills and understanding the nuances of working with individuals affected by eating disorders.

What skills and qualifications are needed for an eating disorder internship?

To thrive in an Eating Disorder Internship, you typically need coursework or a degree in psychology, social work, nutrition, or a related field, along with a demonstrated interest in mental health. Job description

The Division of Developmental and Behavioral Health at Children’s Mercy Kansas City is recruiting for a psychologist to join our multidisciplinary outpatient eating disorders team. The primary clinical responsibilities for this position will include the evaluation and treatment of children and adolescents with eating disorders (anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, avoidant‑restrictive food intake disorder, and related disorders) in an outpatient setting (Eating Disorders Center).

The psychologist in this role will be part of a collaborative, interdisciplinary team of adolescent medicine, behavioral health, and nutrition specialists who work together to provide integrated, comprehensive care. Our program implements evidence‑based treatments for eating disorders, including CBT, DBT, FBT, CBT‑AR, and ACT. Opportunities to participate in program development initiatives, including planning for and implementation of an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), are available.

This position includes teaching in the hospital’s pediatric medical and psychology training programs and protected academic time for service, research, and other scholarly activities. Faculty mentoring is available for those interested in clinical scholarship (e.g., program evaluation, quality improvement initiatives). This position carries an academic appointment at the University of Missouri‑Kansas City School of Medicine, with rank commensurate with qualifications and experience. We are recruiting at all levels of rank/experience.

The successful applicant must share our unwavering commitment to excellence, integrity, collegiality, antiracism, and respect for the inclusion of individuals with diverse backgrounds.

Applicants for this position must have:

  • A PhD or PsyD in clinical psychology, pediatric psychology, or clinical child psychology
  • Completion of an APA‑accredited internship with clinical child and adolescent psychology as a major area of study
  • Eligibility for licensure in Missouri and Kansas
