What is E-Learning Development?

E-Learning development is the process of creating digital educational content and courses that facilitate learning through electronic means, such as computers, tablets, or smartphones. This field involves designing, developing, and implementing interactive learning experiences, often using multimedia elements like videos, quizzes, and simulations. E-Learning developers work closely with subject matter experts, instructional designers, and technology professionals to ensure that online courses are engaging, accessible, and effective. The goal is to make education more flexible and widely available, supporting both individual learners and organizations.

What are some common challenges faced by E-Learning Developers when creating online training modules, and how can they be addressed?

E-Learning Developers often encounter challenges such as ensuring content is engaging and interactive, accommodating diverse learning styles, and keeping up with rapidly changing technology. Balancing technical requirements with instructional design best practices can also be demanding. These challenges can be addressed by collaborating closely with subject matter experts, utilizing user feedback to refine content, and staying updated on emerging e-learning tools and trends. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team and participating in professional development opportunities can also help E-Learning Developers continuously improve their skills and deliver effective learning experiences.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an E-Learning Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an E-Learning Developer, you need expertise in instructional design, multimedia authoring, and a solid understanding of adult learning principles, often supported by a relevant degree or certification. Familiarity with e-learning authoring tools such as Articulate Storyline, Adobe Captivate, and learning management systems (LMS) is typically required. Strong project management, creativity, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with subject matter experts and create engaging content. These skills ensure the development of effective, interactive, and learner-focused online training solutions.

E-Learning Specialist
As an E-Learning Specialist, you'll play a key role in supporting Kumon University's online learning initiatives by developing engaging, effective, and high-quality digital learning experiences for associates and instructors across the organization.
You will:
  • Design Engaging Learning Experiences: Develop interactive, accessible, and learner-centered online training modules that support Kumon University and broader organizational learning needs.
  • Own E-Learning Projects End-to-End: Partner with subject matter experts and internal stakeholders to identify learning objectives, recommend solutions, design content, develop materials, and support implementation.
  • Support the LMS and Learning Technologies: Assist with the management, maintenance, testing, and troubleshooting of Kumon's Learning Management System and related digital learning tools.
  • Collaborate Across Teams: Serve as a liaison between the Online Learning team, SMEs, training teams, vendors, and other departments to ensure learning solutions meet business and learner needs.
  • Use Data to Improve Learning: Run reports, review learning metrics, and provide data to support decision-making and continuous improvement.
  • Create Digital Learning Assets: Develop and update e-learning content, electronic documents, multimedia materials, instructional resources, and other digital solutions as needed.

What We're Looking For:
  • Education: Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree in Instructional Design, Educational Technology, Computer Science, Learning Experience Design, or a related field is a plus.
  • Experience: 3-5 years of experience in e-learning design, instructional design, learning development, LMS support, or a closely related role.
  • Instructional Design Expertise: Experience creating learning objectives, structuring content, designing assessments, and developing engaging learning experiences.
  • E-Learning Development Skills: Hands-on experience developing digital learning content using authoring tools, multimedia tools, LMS platforms, or similar technologies.
  • Project Ownership: Ability to manage projects independently from intake through design, development, implementation, and continuous improvement.
  • Technical Confidence: Comfort learning and using software applications, troubleshooting issues, testing LMS functionality, and supporting technology-based learning solutions.
  • Collaboration Skills: Ability to consult with SMEs and stakeholders, ask thoughtful questions, recommend learning solutions, and communicate clearly throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to organize information clearly and present recommendations effectively.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop interactive and engaging online learning modules in collaboration with the Online Learning Manager.
  • Partner with SMEs from Kumon University, business units, and internal departments to gather information, clarify learning needs, and translate content into effective digital learning solutions.
  • Support teams using the LMS, data-driven decision support tools, videoconferencing, webcasting, and other learning technologies.
  • Assist with LMS administration, including responding to support requests, resolving issues, testing upgrades, and maintaining accurate system functionality.
  • Maintain communication with LMS vendors, software vendors, and consultants to ensure appropriate technical support.
  • Prepare, update, and maintain instructional multimedia materials, electronic documents, user databases, reports, and other digital learning resources.
  • Run system reports on key learning metrics and provide data to management as needed.
  • Identify opportunities to improve online learning materials, processes, learner engagement, and system usability.
  • Stay current with workplace technology, learning innovations, and tools that support high-quality digital learning experiences.

This Role Is Best Suited For Someone Who:
  • Enjoys designing and developing learning materials more than delivering live training.
  • Can take a project from concept to completion with limited guidance.
  • Is comfortable working with both content and technology.
  • Knows how to collaborate with SMEs while also making strong instructional recommendations.
  • Can balance multiple projects, deadlines, and stakeholder needs.
  • Has a strong eye for learner experience, clarity, engagement, and usability.
  • Is eager to support Kumon's mission through high-quality online learning.
