Job description

We are seeking a highly experienced Instrumentation & Electrical (I&E) Design Checker with a minimum of 20 years of oil and gas industry experience to perform detailed checking and quality verification of engineering design deliverables, construction packages, and wiring documentation. The candidate will ensure all deliverables comply with project specifications, client standards, applicable codes, and constructability requirements prior to issue for construction (IFC).

The ideal candidate will possess extensive brownfield and greenfield project experience and demonstrate strong knowledge of instrumentation systems, electrical design, field installation practices, and construction support documentation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform detailed checking and verification of Instrumentation and Electrical engineering deliverables including:
    • Wiring diagrams
    • Loop drawings
    • Cable schedules
    • Junction box termination drawings
    • Instrument index
    • Electrical one-lines
    • Area classification drawings
    • Motor schematics
    • Control panel drawings
    • Interconnect drawings
    • Hook-up drawings
    • Construction work packages
    • IFC drawing packages
  • Review engineering documents for:
    • Technical accuracy
    • Completeness
    • Consistency between documents
    • Compliance with project specifications and client standards
    • Compliance with NEC, IEC, ISA, API, and company engineering practices
    • Constructability and field installation requirements
  • Verify proper cable routing, wire numbering, termination details, and device tagging consistency across all documents.
  • Ensure all comments from previous reviews, client markups, and interdisciplinary coordination reviews are properly incorporated.
  • Coordinate closely with:
    • I&E Designers
    • Engineers
    • Document Control
    • Construction Teams
    • Project Management
    • Client representatives
  • Identify design discrepancies, clashes, and missing information prior to release for construction.
  • Support Management of Change (MOC) processes and revision control activities.
  • Participate in model reviews, constructability reviews, and interdisciplinary design reviews when required.
  • Provide mentoring and technical guidance to junior designers and checkers.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 20 years of Instrumentation & Electrical design/checking experience in the oil & gas, petrochemical, LNG, refinery, or energy industries.
  • Extensive experience reviewing and checking construction and wiring packages for brownfield and greenfield facilities.
  • Strong working knowledge of:
    • NEC
    • IEC
    • ISA standards
    • API standards
    • Hazardous area classifications
    • Industrial control systems
  • Proficiency with industry design tools such as:
    • AutoCAD
    • SmartPlant Instrumentation (SPI / INtools)
    • SmartPlant Electrical (SPEL)
    • MicroStation
    • Bluebeam
    • Navisworks (preferred)
  • Strong understanding of field installation practices, commissioning requirements, and as-built documentation processes.
  • Ability to read and interpret:
    • P&IDs
    • Cause & Effect diagrams
    • Control narratives
    • Electrical schematics
    • Instrument loop diagrams
    • Vendor packages
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Strong communication and coordination abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate degree or technical certification in Electrical Engineering Technology, Instrumentation Technology, or related field.
  • Previous EPC experience preferred.
  • Offshore experience is a plus.
  • Experience supporting turnaround/shutdown projects is beneficial.
