What is a duck master?

A Duck Master is a unique hospitality professional responsible for caring for and directing ducks, most famously at the Peabody Hotels. The Duck Master leads the daily 'March of the Ducks,' where a group of trained ducks parade to and from the hotel lobby fountain. In addition to overseeing the ducks' welfare, the Duck Master often interacts with guests, answers questions, and shares the history of the tradition, making it a memorable experience for visitors. The role combines elements of animal care, public relations, and entertainment.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a duck master at a hotel or resort?

As a Duck Master, your daily responsibilities often include caring for the ducks, such as feeding them and ensuring their living environment is clean and safe. You will also lead the famous duck march, guiding the ducks to and from the hotel's lobby fountain and engaging with guests by sharing the tradition's history. Additionally, Duck Masters may coordinate with other hotel staff to organize special events, answer guest questions, and help maintain the unique guest experience that the role is known for.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a duck master, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Duck Master, you need strong animal care knowledge, public speaking ability, and often a background in hospitality or tourism. Familiarity with animal handling protocols and guest management systems is beneficial, along with any relevant animal welfare certifications. Exceptional interpersonal skills, showmanship, and a warm, engaging personality make someone stand out in this role. These qualities are crucial for ensuring the well-being of the ducks while creating memorable and enjoyable experiences for guests.
