What are drywall helpers?

Drywall helpers are entry-level construction workers who assist experienced drywall installers with tasks related to hanging, finishing, and repairing drywall panels in buildings. Their duties typically include measuring and cutting drywall sheets, preparing surfaces, mixing joint compounds, cleaning up work areas, and handing tools and materials to drywall installers. This role is physically demanding and often serves as a stepping stone to becoming a full-fledged drywall installer. Drywall helpers work on both residential and commercial construction sites under the supervision of skilled tradespeople.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Drywall Helper, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Drywall Helper, you need basic construction knowledge, physical stamina, and the ability to accurately measure and cut drywall, often acquired through on-the-job training or a high school diploma. Familiarity with hand and power tools, such as tape measures, utility knives, drills, and drywall lifts, is typically required. Strong teamwork, attention to detail, and a strong work ethic are valuable soft skills for supporting lead installers and maintaining job site efficiency. These abilities ensure quality workmanship, safety, and timely project completion in a physically demanding construction environment.

What are some common challenges Drywall Helpers face on the job, and how can they prepare for them?

Drywall Helpers often encounter challenges such as working in tight or awkward spaces, managing heavy lifting, and maintaining a clean, safe worksite. Preparing for these challenges involves developing good physical stamina, learning proper lifting techniques, and staying organized with tools and materials. Additionally, being proactive in communicating with the lead drywall installer and the rest of the crew can help ensure tasks are completed safely and efficiently. Staying adaptable and eager to learn from more experienced team members also makes a big difference in overcoming day-to-day obstacles.

Job description

About Us
Reframe Systems is on a mission to build net-zero carbon housing for all, at massive scale. To achieve our mission, we need to make net-zero carbon housing more affordable and we are re-imagining how housing is designed and built. Our modular building platform and highly-automated production system will drive down cost, delivery time, and embodied carbon for ADUs and multifamily housing. We are setting up our first software driven factory in the greater Boston area (Andover, MA), and have a roadmap to scale our presence nationally. We are disrupting assembly line manufacturing for housing production and are backed by leading VC firms in the industrial and construction space.
What We're Looking For
We are seeking a skilled Drywall Hanger to join our factory team and play a critical role in producing high-quality modular housing components. This role is responsible for measuring, cutting, and securely fastening drywall panels to wall and ceiling framing in a controlled manufacturing environment. The ideal candidate has strong experience hanging drywall efficiently and accurately, with a commitment to tight seams, clean cuts, and production-grade quality.
Responsibilities
  • Measure, mark, and cut drywall panels to fit walls, ceilings, and openings around windows, doors, outlets, and other penetrations.
  • Lift, position, and securely fasten drywall panels to wood or metal framing using screw guns, ensuring proper fastener spacing and depth.
  • Stagger and align seams to minimize finishing work and maximize structural integrity.
  • Install drywall on ceilings using lifts or with a partner, maintaining level and plumb surfaces.
  • Cut openings accurately for electrical boxes, HVAC penetrations, plumbing, and fixtures.
  • Inspect framing prior to hanging to identify issues that would affect fit or finish, and flag them to supervisors.
  • Verify panel selection (thickness, fire-rated, moisture-resistant, sound-rated) matches specifications for each application.
  • Collaborate with framers, finishers, and other trades to maintain production schedules and handoff standards.
  • Communicate with supervisors to address challenges and improve workflow.
  • Follow safety protocols and maintain a clean, organized work environment.
  • Clean, maintain, and properly store tools and equipment.

Basic Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 3+ years of experience hanging drywall, preferably in manufacturing or construction.
  • Proficiency with measuring, cutting, and fastening techniques that produce tight seams and minimize finishing rework.
  • Familiarity with tools and equipment used in drywall hanging (e.g., screw guns, utility knives, rasps, T-squares, routers, drywall lifts).
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
  • Physical ability to perform tasks, including lifting up to 50 pounds (including sheets of drywall), and working overhead or on ladders for extended periods.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to craftsmanship.

Working Conditions
  • Factory environment with exposure to construction materials, tools, and equipment.
  • Physical tasks, including standing, lifting, and performing repetitive movements.
  • Some overtime or weekend work may be required based on production schedules.

Why Join Us?
At Reframe Systems, you'll contribute to an innovative and mission-driven company that is transforming housing construction. Your work will help deliver net-zero modular housing at scale, addressing critical challenges in housing and climate. We value precision, craftsmanship, and teamwork in everything we do.
