How much do drivetrain jobs pay per year?

As of Sep 3, 2026, the average yearly pay for drivetrain in the United States is $275,549.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $116,000.00 and $400,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a drivetrain?

A drivetrain is the group of components in a vehicle that transmits power from the engine to the wheels. It typically includes the transmission, driveshaft, axles, and differential. The drivetrain's main role is to deliver the engine's power efficiently, allowing the vehicle to move forward or backward. Different types of drivetrains, such as front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, and all-wheel drive, affect how power is distributed to the wheels and influence handling and performance.

What are the typical challenges faced by drivetrain engineers when collaborating with cross-functional teams during product development?

Drivetrain engineers often work closely with teams from design, manufacturing, and quality assurance, which can present challenges such as aligning technical requirements, managing differing project timelines, and integrating new technologies. Effective communication and flexibility are crucial to ensure that drivetrain components meet overall vehicle performance goals while staying within budget and production constraints. Building strong relationships across departments and being proactive about potential integration issues can help drivetrain engineers navigate these common challenges successfully.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a drivetrain engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Drivetrain Engineer, you need strong knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, drivetrain systems, and typically a degree in mechanical or automotive engineering. Familiarity with CAD software, simulation tools (such as MATLAB or Simulink), and experience with testing equipment are essential technical skills. Problem-solving ability, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills for excelling in this role. These skills ensure the efficient design, analysis, and integration of drivetrain systems that meet safety, performance, and reliability standards.

What is the difference between Drivetrain vs Transmission Technician?

AspectDrivetrainTransmission Technician
Required CredentialsASE certifications, automotive repair licensesASE certifications, specialized transmission repair certifications
Work EnvironmentAuto repair shops, manufacturing plants, dealershipsAuto repair shops, dealerships, transmission service centers
Industry UsageAutomotive industry, manufacturingAutomotive repair and service
Common Search IntentUnderstanding drivetrain components and repairTransmission repair and diagnostics

While both Drivetrain and Transmission Technicians work on vehicle systems, Drivetrain specialists focus on components like axles, driveshafts, and differentials, whereas Transmission Technicians specialize in diagnosing and repairing transmissions. Both roles require automotive repair certifications and are vital in vehicle maintenance, but they target different parts of the vehicle's powertrain system.

Job description

Job type: Full Time ยท Department: Mechanical ยท Work type: On-Site ยท USD 75,000-100,000 / year

St. Louis, Missouri, United States

About Us

At Intramotev, we are liberating tons of freight from congested highways, reducing carbon emissions, and enhancing transportation efficiency. We are deploying self-propelled battery-electric railcars and vehicles to transform freight logistics and bring innovation to our rail network.

Based in St. Louis, MO, we are committed to industrial revitalization and building a safer, cleaner rail industry. Find your future with us.

Role Overview

We are seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to support the drivetrain program, translating drivetrain engineering direction into detailed manufacturing and assembly drawings for powertrain hardware โ€” motor/gearbox interfaces, mounting solutions, enclosures, and axle and bogie integration hardware. You'll start by producing drawings that support the build of a drivetrain test stand, then take on detailed design ownership of drivetrain subsystem hardware within your first several months on the program. This is a full-time, 100% in-office role based in St. Louis, MO. You'll work within a team of 3โ€“10 engineers and engage in occasional domestic travel for testing, integration, and demonstrations.

Key Responsibilities

  • CAD & Drawing Development: Author 3D CAD models for drivetrain components โ€” motor/gearbox interfaces, mounting solutions, enclosures, and axle/bogie integration hardware โ€” handed off by the drivetrain lead.

  • Manufacturing & Assembly Drawings: Produce detailed manufacturing and assembly drawings, applying GD&T, for drivetrain components to support fabrication and build.

  • Test Stand Support: Translate drivetrain test-stand requirements into fixture and bracket drawings.

  • Fabrication & Build Support: Support fabrication and assembly of the test stand and troubleshoot fit-up issues during build.

  • Subsystem Design Ownership: Take on detailed design ownership of drivetrain subsystem hardware โ€” mounting solutions, brackets, enclosures, and interface hardware โ€” under the drivetrain lead's technical direction, starting within your first several months on the program.

  • Collaboration: Work closely with the drivetrain lead and the Mechanical Engineering Team Lead to clarify ambiguous or partially-specified requirements and keep drawings aligned to fabrication and assembly needs.

Intramotev offers a comprehensive benefits package for all team members, including:

  • Medical coverage: We cover 100% of employee medical premiums, plus low-cost dental and vision options.

  • Vacation: Full-time employees enjoy unlimited paid time off.

  • Equity: Full-time employees receive equity in the company.

  • Parental leave: New parents receive paid time off to spend quality time with their family.

About You: Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience)

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical field.

2โ€“4 years of mechanical design experience, including creating manufacturing/assembly drawings with GD&T, using 3D CAD tools such as Autodesk Inventor or equivalent.

Willingness to expand into technical areas beyond your area of expertise; ability to develop innovative and novel approaches.

Comfortable working from ambiguous or partially-specified requirements handed off by a technical lead.

Open-minded and comfortable working in a teaming environment as an individual contributor.

Fluent in both written and verbal English.

Authorized to work in the U.S. at time of hire without employer-sponsored visa status (OPT/F-1 practical training authorization acceptable); no sponsorship provided to reach a start date, but Intramotev is open to sponsoring continued work authorization (e.g. an H-1B transfer) after the candidate has started, at its discretion.

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience)

Candidate should have a working knowledge of one or (ideally) multiple areas listed below:

  • Experience supporting test stand or prototype fixture builds, with drawings that carry through to physical fabrication and assembly.

  • Exposure to electromechanical or drivetrain hardware โ€” motors, gearboxes, mounting/enclosure design, axle or bogie integration.

  • Background in rail, EV, automotive, or heavy-machinery industries.

  • Experience with a PLM/PDM system (e.g., Autodesk Vault).

Typical Education and Experience

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education (e.g. Bachelor and/or Master) and typically 2 or more years' related work experience.

Relocation

Intramotev offers a competitive relocation package for qualified candidates.

Equal Opportunity Employer

Intramotev is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Employment decisions are made without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, physical or mental disability, genetic factors, military/veteran status or other characteristics protected by law.

Closing

If you're passionate about mechanical engineering and eager to contribute to autonomous rail technology, we'd love to hear from you!
