Philanthropy amp; Donor Relations Internship – 2026
Department: Philanthropy
Location: ZooTampa at Lowry Park – Tampa, FL
Internship Period: August - December (Fall term)
Description
The Philanthropy amp; Donor Relations Internship offers hands-on experience in nonprofit fundraising, donor stewardship, and event planning within a mission-driven, AZA-accredited zoo. Interns will work alongside the Senior Director of Philanthropy, Director of Donor Relations, and Philanthropy Assistant to support donor engagement, special events, and daily philanthropy operations. This internship provides the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of nonprofit development and gain exposure to donor relations strategies, stewardship activities, and high-profile fundraising events.
Internship Functions May Include, But Are Not Limited To:
  • Assist with planning and execution of ZooTampa’s signature fundraising events.
  • Prepare and assemble silent auction packages, gift baskets, and other donor recognition materials.
  • Support donor stewardship activities, including preparing thank-you letters, personalized touches, and creative recognition pieces.
  • Help with preparation of donor meeting materials, proposals, and campaign collateral.
  • Support coordination of donor and member engagement activities.
  • Provide administrative support for philanthropy operations, including mailings, record-keeping, and data entry.
  • Assist with inventory and fulfillment of donor benefits.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Philanthropy team.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Applicants currently pursuing a degree in nonprofit management, communications, marketing, public relations, business, hospitality, or related fields preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail; ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Professional demeanor with the ability to interact with donors, volunteers, and staff.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Must be comfortable with self-direction.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
Required Availability
  • Commitment to a minimum of 10 hours a week (11-15 preferred).
  • Flexible weekday hours between 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., 1–5 days per week.
  • If total semester hours must equal more than 20 hours per week, additional hours may be added.
  • Occasional evenings and weekends for events.
Physical Abilities
  • Ability to work in both indoor office and outdoor event environments in typical Florida climate (heat, humidity, rain).
  • Must be able to stand or walk for extended periods during events.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds with or without accommodation.
Additional Requirements
If an internship offer is made, it is contingent upon:
  • Successful completion of a criminal background screening and execution of a required hold harmless/liability release agreement (Philanthropy Office will be responsible for background check cost).
  • Interns must have personal health insurance coverage for illness or injury (the Zoo’s workers’ compensation program does not cover interns or volunteers).
  • Completion of Zoo’s orientation.
  • Candidates seeking academic credit must finalize arrangements between the Zoo and their school prior to the internship start date.
