Job Summary

We are looking for motivated engineers who can help shape the culture of a forward-looking company that's proud of its rich legacy. Dominion's Substation Engineering department is seeking for an experienced technical and project lead for design and implementation of Dominion's Electric Transmission and Distribution Substations projects. This work is vital to support the Company's Transmission and Distribution growth plans and includes support of larger scale projects requiring diverse knowledge of engineering principles and practices.   This position will be responsible for the conceptual design, scope of work and estimates for Dominion's Electric Transmission and Electric Distribution Substations ranging from 4kV to 765kV.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Conceptual design of Electrical Utility Substations for New construction and upgrades.
  • Coordinate input from a multi-disciplined project team (substation, system protection, planning, transmission line, distribution, construction, operation, civil/structural, permitting, real estate) and define the project scope.
  • Create and/or modify Substation physical design drawings for substation projects including the conceptual one-line diagrams and General Arrangements. 
  • Create project cost estimates using material and labor costing database for the Physical portion of projects. Make necessary updates to the database to improve accuracy and consistency.
  • Develop Conceptual Engineering Scope/Estimate Packages for projects and support the Project Managers to take proposed projects through the project approval process.
  • Facilitate smooth transition of the conceptual design to detail engineering and implementation team. 
  • Provide technical expertise and/or team leadership as needed. Provide assistance to less experienced engineers and technicians in conceptual engineering, detail engineering and the field.
  • Participate in site visits to support the construction group and/or asset owners.
  • Represent the company at the state and county commissions applications/hearings and community open houses. 
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Senior Engineer: Minimum of 5 years of relevant engineering experience (Substation applications) or demonstrated equivalent.

Staff Engineer: Minimum of 8 years of relevant engineering experience (Substation applications) or demonstrated equivalent.

Engineering Technical Specialist III: Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience (Substation applications) and demonstrated competencies in an applicable discipline.

  • Thorough understanding and knowledge of substation components and their functions
  • Firm understanding of the physical design principles and practices for major substation equipment, transmission lines and distribution feeder configurations
  • Ability to read, interpret, and modify one-line diagrams, Substation plan and elevation drawings
  • Experience with AutoCAD or MicroStation is a preferred
  • Ability to think analytically and solve complex problems 
  • Ability to interpret codes, regulations, and practices 
  • Planning, organizational and project management skills 
  • Self-motivator who can work cooperatively in a team environment, but is comfortable independently seeking knowledge and information
  • Ability to process information quickly and effectively manage multiple tasks
  • Strong time management skills with the ability to independently plan and organize work assignments
  • Effective decision-making skills 
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Education Requirements

For placement of a candidate in the Engineer job series, the following criteria must be met:

  • Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an ABET accredited Engineering program based on the year that the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
  • Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own Engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, or
  • Possess a 4-year degree in Engineering (non-ABET accredited), Physics, Chemistry, Math or Engineering Technology and a post-graduate Engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same Engineering discipline is ABET-accredited based on the year the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
  • Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license. 

For the Engineering Technical Specialist job series, the following criteria must be met:

   4-year Engineering Technology degree or 4-year degree in Engineering (not ABET-accredited); or

   4-year degree in Physics, Math, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Engineering or other technical related discipline; or

   4-year non-technical degree and post-graduate degree in Engineering Technology or Engineering (not ABET-accredited); or

   Equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of preferred degree

Licenses, Certifications, or Quals Description
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) license is preferred
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license is a plus

Engineering Technical Specialist III: $90900 - $118100

Senior Engineer: $90900 - $118100

Staff Engineer: $99800 - $129600

The expected hiring base salary range is the range we anticipate hiring within for this position. The actual salary offered may vary based on factors such as the selected candidate's qualifications, skills, experience, and work location. This is not intended to represent the full salary range for the position or limit future compensation growth.
