Arete designs afterschool and summer programming that exposes youth to diverse career pathways; builds academic, wellness, and leadership skills; and expands access to the arts and culture. Job Summary

The Arete Teacher (Licensed) will design and lead engaging and safe learning activities for Arete Education Youth Afterschool and Summer Programs that align to one or more program areas: Academic Interventions, Credit-Bearing Courses or Enrichment Clubs

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Course/Club Preparation Tasks (due before the first day of summer session)

    • Submit a curriculum map (template) prior to the start of each semester to your supervisor that includes backward design principles and weekly/daily learning goals for students.

    • Use the Arete supply request form system to pre-order supplies for your course two weeks ahead of when supplies are needed. 

    • Submit all expected trip proposals for the term via Arete Field Trip Proposal Form

    • Create student-facing description of each course/club (HS Catalog, MS Catalog)

    • Confirm room number, roster, snack schedule, and all logistics with supervisor before the first session

  • Weekly Teaching Tasks:

    • Attendance: 

      • For all teachers (including credit-bearing courses) offering on-site activities, take attendance by: 

        • Teacher calling student names noting who is present and by passing the attendance sign-in sheet around the classroom for students to complete (not designating these duties to an intern or student in the class if teacher does not know student names)

        • Teachers must review and sign each attendance each day 

        • Teachers must ensure attendance sheets are returned to the Arete site director's office daily. 

        • Students who enter late should be given the opportunity to sign in each day.

    • Lesson Plans

      • Provide weekly or daily lesson plans as requested

    • Daily execution of engaging learning activities for youth ages 11-19

  • Monthly Employee and Team Tasks

    • Attend and participate in regular team meetings, events, trainings, and coaching sessions.

    • For credit-bearing courses, enter progress reports and grades as requested by school administrators. 

    • Participate in regular performance meetings with supervisor and/or Arete coach.

    • Conduct family outreach to support positive student social emotional learning experiences and sustain a program-wide student attendance goal of 80%+80%+ 

    • Share evidence of classroom learning (photos, videos, student work) via https://arete.wetransfer.com 

  • Arete Employee Performance Expectations

    • Use Arete employee systems for communication and time-tracking, and payment:

      • Applicant Stack - initial application and onboarding tasks

      • Paycom - payroll, tax, sick time, benefits,all HR tasks and daily timecard punch system

      • Google Apps - daily email use and drive use for communication 

    • Embraces learning and developing as a professional

    • Demonstrate exceptional services skills, communication skills, problem-solving skills, professionalism, a positive and encouraging demeanor and a "can do" attitude.

    • Always represent the Arete Education and Partner schools in the best light, consistent with organizational standards of conduct. 

    • Collaborate with staff across the organization 

    • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • Licensed Teacher in New York State

  • Mandated Reporter and Foundations in Health and Safety online trainings required (7-hours)

  • Department of Health and Department of Education background clearance

  • Bachelor's Degree, Masters' Degree preferred

  • We strongly encourage graduates of the Laboratory School of Finance and Technology or other graduates of Arete partner schools to apply.

 

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times. 

  • Must be able to traverse classroom and adjust one's tone and height, by bending or leaning, in order to support program activities
