Position:
Preschool Special Education Itinerant Teacher
(One Year Position)
Location:
The selected teacher will be assigned to one payroll school in district 1-32, and the teacher will report to the payroll principal. The teacher may support students at neighboring schools/programs in contiguous districts if caseload allows.
NUMBER OF POSITIONS AVAILABLE: 10
Term:
One year. At the end of the term. SEITs shall return to their prior school or, in the event the SEIT is a new hire, then they shall return to the district (or borough) in which they worked the majority of their time.
Eligibility;
  • Applicants must possess a valid New York State Teacher certification and license in Students with Disabilities (All Grandes) or Students with Disabilities (Birth to Grade 2).
  • Applicants must have a minimum of 5 years teaching experie3nce in an early childhood special education classroom.

Selection Criteria:
  • Knowledge of preschool special education and early childhood education, including specific strategies, knowledge of adaptations and modifications that enable young children to learn in classroom environments
  • Knowledge of the preschool and school-age continuums of services, special education processes and regulations of the NYSED Commissioner
  • Ability to set up data and monitoring systems to support children in making progress toward IEP goals
  • Experience with DOE technology and systems
  • Demonstrated expertise in using the consultative process to support educators' professional growth
  • Experience with implementation of a range of instructional methodologies developmentally appropriate for young children
  • Ability to build relationships and work collaboratively with diverse educators and families
  • Demonstrated success using culturally responsive educational practices
  • Knowledge of assistive technology appropriate for preschool students and its use in classrooms for individual students
  • Experience in using data and research to inform practice
  • Excellent record of attendance and satisfactory ratings
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and written communication

Duties/Responsibilities:
The Preschool Special Education Itinerant Teacher will perform the following duties and responsibilities:
Direct Service Delivery
  • Deliver one-on-one or small group services to preschool children aligned to IEP mandates. The instructional group size for mandated sessions may range from one to five students with a maximum caseload of 20 students.
  • Facilitate goal-oriented activities that promote student participation in learning
  • Develop and implement IEPs, quarterly progress reports, annual progress reports and ongoing authentic assessments in NYCPS' current special education document management system
  • Utilize a variety of teaching strategies to meet the unique needs of preschool students with disabilities
  • Assess and document children's performance, including ongoing areas in need of development and progress
  • Arrange to provide make-up sessions when sessions were missed due to staff absence and as appropriate to the needs of the student, any excused student absences as caseload and schedule allows
  • Maintain accurate records of encounters for students on their assigned caseload

Indirect Service Delivery
  • Provide IEP mandated consultation to the child's teacher to adjust the learning environment and/or modify instructional methods to meet the individual needs of preschool students with IEPs
  • Support teachers in monitoring students' IEP goals
  • Provide parent counseling and training as documented on student IEPs
  • Performs other duties as per the UFT collective Bargaining Agreement

Special Education Coordination
  • Work with administrators, instructional staff and related service providers to ensure the provision of services to the students as per their IEP mandates
  • Maintain ongoing communication and partnerships with families
  • Establish collaborative relationships with the CPSE
  • Attend IEP meetings for students on their assigned caseloads

Miscellaneous
  • May participate in focus groups and provide feedback on this pilot program during the contractual workday or as a per session activity.
  • Attend professional learning provided by the central Special Education Office during work hours.

Salary:
As per UFT collective Bargaining Agreement
Work Schedule:
  • The SEIT will follow the single session workday schedule totaling 6 hours and 20 minutes, across a 5-day work week (Monday-Friday) with 155 minutes of extended time, pursuant to the collective bargaining agreement inclusive of adequate travel time
  • Working conditions, i.e. travel time should not be taken from duty free lunch, preparation period, etc., consistent with the UFT collective bargaining agreement may participate in focus groups and provide feedback on this pilot program during the contractual workday or as a per session activity
