Job Description
We have an opening for a Radiological Control Technician (RCT) in the Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H) Directorate, to support the National Ignition Facility (NIF) and Photon Sciences Principal Directorate. You will complete qualifications as a Department Of Energy (DOE) RCT through the LLNL RCT training program and provide radiological control functions, health physics counting lab support and operation and maintenance of radiological monitoring equipment in support of multi-shift operations; perform radiological and beryllium surveys and measurements; oversee radiological aspects of work performed by NIF technicians; perform decontamination and maintenance on equipment contaminated with radioactive materials and/or beryllium.
This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.
This position requires full-time on-site presence due to the nature of the work.
You will
  • Provide general technical support, guidance and monitoring in radiation protection, to assist programmatic personnel in the safe performance of facility and experimental operations. Monitor and assist NIF radiation workers in safe radiological work practices.
  • Perform radiological surveys and measurements to ensure adequate radiological safety. Collect samples for analysis. Maintain appropriate radiological postings.
  • Operate and maintain radiological detection and sampling equipment including hand-held meters, electronic dosimeters, swipe counters, liquid scintillation counters, gamma spectroscopy detectors, stack and area air monitoring systems and sample collectors, neutron bubble detectors, etc. Review measurement data to determine basic safety compliance with an established design or a standard procedure.
  • Obtain, prepare and assist with analyses of radiological samples. Handle, package, and transport radioactive and beryllium contaminated materials.
  • Initiate appropriate corrective action (under general supervision) to assure adherence to procedures and design criteria. Keep the Radiation Safety Officer/Deputy Radiation Safety Officer informed of changes in radiological conditions or systems through regular communication.
  • Respond and participate in radiological emergency response activities or off-normal events.
  • Conduct field training and training evaluations in support of NIF worker qualifications.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional job responsibilities, at the 571.3 level
  • Calibrate radiological detection and sampling equipment.
  • Observe, interpret and take measurements of, and analyze moderately complex data from advanced radiological monitoring equipment, systems, or operations to determine safety compliance with an established design or a standard procedure.
  • Assist in the writing and preparation of safety policies and procedures including safety controls for Radiation Work Permits, other Work Control Documents and safety routine requirements.
Qualifications
  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Associate degree in Occupational Safety or Radiation Protection with related experience or equivalent combination of education and extensive experience in Occupational Safety, Radiation Protection or related scientific area.
  • Intermediate technical knowledge, ability to acquire and analyze basic data, experience in the maintenance and operation of radiological detection and analytical instrumentation and equipment, and practical radiological contamination control practices.
  • Experience operating and maintaining radiological sampling and detection equipment, or other analytical equipment of similar complexity.
  • Effective, high-quality interpersonal, written, verbal, and presentation communication skills to provide technical guidance and write technical documentation.
  • Analytical, decision making, and problem-solving skills including the ability to interpret and report results.
  • Ability to complete formal DOE Radiological Control Technician qualifications.
  • Ability to work independently, under general supervision, and in a team environment in a fast-paced, schedule-driven environment.
  • Ability to work various shifts in support of around-the-clock operations.
Additional qualifications at the 571.3 level
  • Advanced technical skills and knowledge, ability to acquire and analyze moderately complex data, experience in the maintenance and operation of radiological detection and analytical instrumentation and equipment, and practical radiological contamination control practices.
  • Independent analytical, decision making, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience in evaluating safe performance of maintenance and operations, identifying problems, and providing solutions.
  • Experience as an instructor for on-job-training, establishing appropriate work methods, initiating corrective actions, and setting work priorities.
Qualifications We Desire
  • Knowledge of and experience with NIF policies and procedures.
  • Current DOE RCT certification. Current or former qualification as a DOE beryllium worker or equivalent.
  • Experience performing radiological controls involving tritium, depleted uranium, and/or transuranics.
Pay Range: $43.55- $63.97 Hourly
$43.55- $53.36 Hourly for the 571.2 level
$52.23 - $63.97 Hourly for the 571.3 level

Security Clearance
This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.
